89th Indianapolis 500 Race Thread * SPOILERS *

Since I don't have time to join the live chat, I figured I'd get a regular race thread started as well.

Anyhow, great start to the race - the Penske Toyotas look real racy so far, but Kanaan is leading.

Larry Foyt crashed a few laps ago, and he might have hurt his back (his crash was very similar to the ones by Dana and Rice). How the heck Castroneves managed to avoid Foyt's crashed car is beyond me.

To say the least - talk about purely acting on reflex

Hm, Danica apparently ran over an airhose in the pits, but I sure couldn't see it on the video replay. I hope she doesn't get a penalty.

On the replay, she didn't run over anything. However whoever was in the box ahead ran over her hose.

Tony Kanaan seems very strong today.

As does Buddy Lazier - would be great to see him pick up a top finish

I've always felt US racing is a bit too pernickety in dishing out penalties for running over air hoses in any case. It doesn't gain an advantage and it doesn't put anyone at risk.

Foyt has been taken to hospital, complaining about back pain.

EDIT - I hope the IRL takes a look at the construction of the cars. I mean, it's not like the first time they have problems with the rear end construction, causing back injuries..

Hm, lol, did anyone but me see that they had Franchitti's picture for Buddy Lazier in the top-5 run-down as the US broadcast went to commercial?

Woah, close call for Dan Wheldon there, narrowingly missing two cars slowing to enter the pits.

jonboyG has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
Dear lord I wish these inane fools giving us the race commentary would stop with the £$%ing Danica Patrick. There's a whole field of racers out there, time to concentrate on some of them methinks.

And I'm sorry, but I cannot see how this kind of racing is supposed to be more exciting than F1.

Don't watch it then, jonboyG.

It's neither more or less interesting than F1 - just different.

I like both.

Best not to speculate at the moment - although the fact they've shown replays is positive

Agreed.

Has anyone with the US commentary feed heard anything?

AJ Foyt IV's interview hasn't said "I hope he's OK" or anything...

I guess the safety guys are the best in the world, adn tehy'll know what they're doing in any eventuality.

Race seems to be good, although the lack of live timing working makes it ahrder to follow. Kanaan, Wheldon and Hornish might have the ebst ultiamte overall pace

jon - we've had a major crash, with a driver's condition not yet known - and you're laughing at a run-of-the-mill stall in the pits

Very classy.

He did on the audio.

And said that his spotter warned him there was a car inside.

**** should be prosecuted for that bonehead move.
