Gilles, hands down. Gilles was a racer - always at the limit and yet the other pilots trusted him 100%. Mario Andretti said you could always race him to the millimeter because he would not take you off deliberately like some current drivers would. Incidentally, I think Gilles is Exhibit "A" for the wrongheadedness of Team Orders -- had there been no team orders at Ferrari, Gilles would have been a World Champion too. (Or had he had the lack of scruples his erstwhile teammate Pironi demonstrated ...)
Jacques is a thinking driver, which is likely good for today's ROI-geared overly-automated F1 world. But Jacques by and large is too cautious to be much fun to watch, and when he does make an audacious move now and then he seems to lunge rather than to pass, and end up on the grass or in the wall. Gilles was a racer. Alesi is a racer. Jacques is a driver. FORZA GILLES, NOW AND FOREVER. |
