CHASSIS F2-5-57

Good day

I have just joined the forum. I live in South Africa. I am the current owner of chassis F2-5-57. We bought the car in 1978. It is totally origina - body, chassis, engine. It still has the school engine fitted as recorded in the chassis records. It also has the original chassis plate fitted to the floor board, not on the dash as one would expect. Attached are pictures of the car, the engine and copies of the original hand written chassis register I obtained from Doug Nye.

I will post a picture of the chassis plate soon.

Welcome Nols. I would be very interested to know the history of your car up to 1978. Was it raced in South Africa?

Hi Nols, welcome, any current activities with the car?
I loved to read the FW/FP translations, "enkel nokas and dubbel nokas" ..

At the moment the car is dorment - in safe dry storage. I hope to build a bigger "toyroom" early next year which will allow space for all the cars. (I also have a few veteren & vintage cars in my collection).

The car was bought in England by a chap by the name of Micky Thomson in the mid sixties. He brought the car to Walfishbay in what is now Namibie and used the car for drag racing on the beach.

He sold the car to a guy in Welkom, South Africa whom I have not been able to trace. He in turn sold the car to Colin Venter in Bloemfontein from whom we bought it in totally original and complete condition. the car did however require to be restored.

It is said to have been painted in Rob Walker's colours for a demo by S Moss at one of the GPs at Malbourne in the 1990s and still wears them with a 2-litre Climax (Malcolm Cook).

Cooper T43 F2/20/57

Hi Guys

I am new to this forum. I am part of a South African based restoration company in Cape Town and we have just been commissioned by the owner to restore his Cooper T43 . "F2/20/57
As this is a complete nut and bolt restoration I am looking for some advice to how some of the body parts fit. Would some-one be willing to assist me in this project.

Look forward to hearing from you soon.

Cooper t43 South Africa

As an update for anyone that may be interested.
3 T43s have passed through my hands, in fact one has stayed. At one stage all were with me at the same time

#29 Did go to Don Philps, was re chassised into the Quadra that proved to be unsuccessful. It was returned to the Cooper chassis, modified to wishbone front suspension as on T45. It ended up under the proverbial tree in the then Northern Transvaal and from there went to Rhodesia. It came though me to Dickon Daggit in Cape Town and he tells me has now passed it onto Europe and this car still had the 1640 engine in it.

#20 The ex Jimmy de Villiers car remained in Rhodesia where some one tried/or did insert a V8 of some description. I kept it for some time in South Africa with it's originally supplied Climax and very bad body. I passed it onto Rodney Green who is having it restored in Cape Town and last seen it looks very good. There can't be many Climax engined cars around that still have an original engine.

#22 Is the ex Brown car that my good friend Doug Serrurier bought and had to pass on to Syd before it arrived on our shores due to an attack of financialitis. Syd's mechanic at the the time was Peter de Klerk , of Alfa Special fame, and he installed the engine to Syd's instructions. From Syd it went to Bruce Johnstone, from him to Adrian Pheiffer. Pheifer used it up until 1962 and later passed in onto one Danie van Niekerk who stripped it.
It was later found and went from Danie into the ownership of Ivan Glasby. Many many years ago I managed to pry it out of Ivan(he didn't managed to keep it more than a few months) as this is the one I wanted. It was the car owned, worked on by many good friends and connected with me having literally grown up with it in Durban.
I have probably had this car for the best part of 20 years. Many other projects have intervened but the car is now approaching completion and I am building it back to the Syd, Bruce, Adrian spec. as in this form it was an iconic car that was the first "modern" single seater on our shores. It ushered in what became known as the "Golden Age of South African Motor Racing"
I have access to the full history of the car, every event including hillclimbs, sprints etc and of course many many pics

I hope to have it finished in 2017

Cooper T43 body

Does anyone recognise this T43 body, pretty distinctive paintwork. I think that it has not been touched since the 60's.
Thanks.
Paul.

Hi Roadmap.

I have seen a car sporting that plate during the Monterey Historics in 2011 adn 2012. The owner also put this info next to his car. I hope it is readible. Whether the info corresponds to this actual chassis I would not know, but I suppose there is at least a chance. The car is green with a white rim around the nose.

Cooper T43

Does any one out there have a colour Foto of Syd Van der Vyver F2-22-57

I need to get some paint on the body and my memory of the shade of red is hazy.
My recollection was Maroon but it could have been another shade of red.

All help much apreciated
