I had been trying to get a copy of "Archie and the Listers" by Robert Edwards for some time.... I picked a copy up in a deceased estate auction for a decent price. Hardback.

Absolutely magnificent account of Archie Scott Brown and one of the best books I have read. Very well written, entertaining and a fabulous story. The challenges A SB faced due to his disabilities, not just in racing but in life were immense, and the spirit with which he met those challenges is remarkable. Archie Scott Brown is now one of my heroes. An extraordinary and courageous man.

Quote:
The product of an unlikely union first took to the track, at Snetterton in Norfolk. It was a Lister-MG sports racing car, driven by a Scottish amateur who made his living as a travelling salesman. He stormed through to win. The disabled driver was Archie Scott Brown. Over the next five years he won 71 major races, 44 of them in Cambridge built Lister cars. The book chronicles Archie Scott Brown's personal life, from being born with both legs severely malformed, through countless operations that led to a remarkably normal childhood and adolescence. The author follows his fascination with fast cars, early wins in an MG TD, his introduction to engineer, Brian Lister, and the influence his driving had on the development of the marque.

The heroic story of Archie Scott Brown and the racing marque he made famous. A never before told story of endeavor, tragedy and nostalgia. If there is one race driver whose life captures so many elements of courage and success in his field, it is Archie Scott Brown. If there is a cipher for engineering excellence, a desire to do it, and do it right, it is Brian Lister. Get the full story in this first complete history of the glorious Lister cars - powered by MG, Bristol, Maserati, Jaguar and Corvette. Foreword by Brian Lister.
Highly recommended.

Yes, that is a great book, especially since Snetterton is my home circuit.

I bought my copy new some years ago & a mutual friend got it signed by Brian Lister for me.

My copy is signed by the author, not as good as by Lister but something.. Strangely enough Archie's Lister debut at Snetterton in April 1954 was on the actual day of my birth so I feel an affinity to him!

70 years ago this year!

Ah, so I am older than you!

I can't remember if I was at Snetterton that day, but my mother always said I was two years old on my first visit, so probably later in the year since my birthday is in May.

Yes, when I looked on Amazon they were not new.

Aren't World of Books the people who sell 'as new' books in very poor condition?

Fortunately my glasses are mostly paid-for by my mutuel. Getting them is a rather more long-winded process than in the UK.

Don't tell me about, John. Just bought a new pair and paid in excess of 1800 € (Varilux top of the range). Thanks my mutuelle, was charged for a fraction. Back to old books, I remember an area in London (not too far from Picadilly) where several merchants had a wide selection of as-new or VGC books. May be they can ship? Was not the case when I bought very thick and complete real workshop manuals ("Manuel d'atelier" for dealers not Haynes) for different cars.

Motorbooks just off Trafalgar Square? Not sure if they are still there. The wonderful mecca of St Martin's Models, just round the corner, has gone to. Believe it was owned by one-time Mustang racer Ralph Avis.

For my next glasses I will probably revert to Specsavers in Folkestone - much simpler!

In my experience (so far) all of the books I've had have been exactly as described - in good condition...

I believe you're right John, I remember a sloping street, a lot of merchants, relaxed atmosphere with mainly helpful people even to the lost tourists we were. A kind of well organised flea market but much more professional (and honest!). Those were the days I fear.

I've always enjoyed Jeremy Walton's writing, be it in magazine articles or the many books he has written. (My first book of his was Only Here for the Beer - the biography of saloon car racer Gerry Marshall).

I picked this one up at the weekend, its 400 + pages recounting his career of testing & writing about Fast Ford road & racing cars with lots of top quality period photographs. I've only just started looking through it myself but am sure it will be of interest to a few of you.

I'm just in the process of reading Graham Robson's 'The Works Escorts', which is quite an interesting story - it's frightening just how long ago it all was! My copy is the third edition, published in 1996, so concluding with the Escort Cosworth.

Another book I have in my library John. A fascinating read and I am sure is also 100% factually correct, Graham Robson was an old-school writer.

He wasn't always right! A friend of mine had the onerous job of 'fact-checking' (to use modern parlance!) one of his books. My friend was an expert on the subject & found a lot wrong with it.

I enjoyed Jeremy Walton books about Capris for various reasons. It was a quest in London streets to find them and the way they're written makes them easy to read for a foreigner. On the dark side, I was looking for secrets of period revealed but he's rather shy on the subject, though. In the racer dictionary, secret could mean cheating.
