Official update from the crashed NSX team:

Quote:
Most of you have heard that a suspension component failed on the car this morning just two turns into our first run. The resultant impact, which was followed by a massive explosion resulted in extensive damage to the car. After careful inspection of the car, we have good news. And we have bad news. The bad first; we have officially withdrawn from the 2013 Pikes Peak International Hillclimb. The repairs required to have a competition-ready car by tomorrow's Qualifying are just not possible. The good news; the core of the car is salvageable and was relatively unharmed. Body, Aero, and suspension all did their jobs of absorbing impact/shedding themselves before chassis damage could occur. So that being said, we are staying a couple of days to offer assistance to other teams. First up, exhaust repairs on Pat Doran's RS200 after his big off this morning.

What's really interesting about this car is that I believe it uses an automatic transmission. I watched an onboard video of the car testing recently, and Doran wasn't using any stick shift, or paddles behind the steering wheel. The car just appeared to upshift by itself. I assumed everybody used a manual in this event, so it'll be interesting to see how this car's run works out.

I very much doubt it is automatic

The car was originally a hillclimb car in Berg Cup races in Europe, andw as very much normal. Pat has owned and run RS200's for years and was still rallycrossing one in the mid 2000's. And this car is NOT one of those. It was built and run bu Graham Hathaway for a guy called Dieter Knuttell.

I think Pat and the team ahve fitted either a flappy paddle or sequential gearbox to it, and maybe it can do automatic upshifts, but I seriously doubt it is fully auto

It would not really lend itself to sports use if it was.

Definately. I know its not everyones cup of tea, but I think the Monster RS200 looks fantastic. Really hoping to see/hear a full video of it making it to the top this year!

Yeah, they have mentioned sequential gearbox in the build up.

I can see where Ferrari333SP is coming from, as if you watch the onboard video I can't see any visible paddle for gear shifts. Unless, as you say, its doing automatic upshifts.

Sorry to let all my friends, families and sponsor's down but you have to know when to step back.

If you look closely at Pat Dorans inboard video he has one small paddle for the right hand. he does shift but it looks like he isn`t hes just doing small touches with hes fingers.

I suspect the upgrades for next year is of aero type. Firstly i suspect the blown diffuser either does not work as intended (due to the lack of sufficient angle), and that they will alter it or it will simply get removed. Also the huge intercooler intake disturbs the airflow for the rear wing so its likely it gives less downforce at higher speeds due to turbulence. There is a reason for the others having the wing way above and clear of the roof. That has been done since the 80s.

Mark Rennison seems to be running some serious attempt at doing venturies. He got rubber skirts and openings for controlling the airflow going under it. I like it. But the guides behind the rear wheel arc is stupidly angled. They at least does not work as a wing.. more like a plow. They must be. silly angle.

I have noticed that when the Doran RS200 was displayed both last year and this year, it had a much bigger rear wing...

...but when it comes to running it at Pikes Peak they seem to be using a much smaller wing (which seems closer to the wing setup on the rallycross RS200)

Wow, where's your effort then? They slam the car off track, bang it up pretty good and the at track repairs couldn't give the car the balance to make it competitive. Retiring the car rather than have a second off in a unbalanced car seems the smart and prudent thing to do, but then I don't think being stupid is more tough or manly.

he chanced his mind. Hes going. Not sure if they have fixed the balance or what. Perhaps they had some track time on the local racetrack and fixed it.

Or. They have gotten some aero chances to the car. or both. Will be interesting for sure to see the result. He might just limp up the track for pr purposes. lets see.
