That would be a very rich label to hang upon someone like David John of Team Kiwi Racing, pete55.
Hopefully if either John Banks or Dick Hubbard win the Auckland mayoralty, it still goes ahead. I would think that with the Mayor of the North Shore, Mr George Wood, and Transit NZ (or Traffic NZ as they were aptly called in the latest Motorsport News), things should gel together quite nicely. On the subject of Motorsport News, a huge thanks must go to you for publicly naming the vindictive, obtrusive, and completely ignorant Brian Rudman. Some people at the NZ Herald aren't too amused it seems, but hopefully Senour Rudman might be told to shut up for a sweet change instead of pessimistically opinionise the world of his own self-interest and minority minutae which is usually far from rationality, the truth, and popular public opinion. |

Pete55, maybe their motives are not total "pure", but at least they care enough to try and make sure we get our share.

Why don't they put their energy into getting a worthwhile permanent circuit that will benefit all motorsport. There would be a lot more merit in that.

Just because they go to a street race it doesn't mean they end up becoming motorsport fans. They do nothing for motorsport, only fill the likes of TC's pockets.

There will be no benefits to the other classes in NZ or the permanent tracks as the profits will all go to TC, the Auckland promotors and the City Councillors whose palms they had to grease to get it there. Gold Coast Indy is a typical case. Aren't some of the classes still waiting on appearance monies from last year? I may be wrong there but thought I read that in the local Gold Coast newspaper a while back. What people are failing to realize in NZ is that any potential new sponsors will want to be seen on the main attraction to justify the money, unfortunately not the supporting classes that are there all year round where it would do more good for them. As for attracting more people I work with a lot of people (my employer has over 700 staff)that go to Indy every year and about 95% of them have no idea what a V8 Supercar is or even a Indy car let alone who the drivers are. They just go for the 4 day party. So how does that benefit the support categories? It doesn't! As for the problem with Puke D.R.T., I will cop a caning for this but its not in the Manawatu region. You only have to look at the support for Manfield on here. Build covered in pitboxes and fix some of the bumps that have always added character to Puke and you would have something similiar to Willowbank. I cant comment on other Australian tracks as I havent been to any others that still exist other than Bathurst since the advent of street racing.

How many people whose first motorsport event is a street race (eg...Adelaide 500) actually end up going to other races?
Everyone goes on about how they introduce new people to the sport and get them into it. Does it get them anywhere bar the place where it started? |

NOBODY, as in NOBODY that is not a die-hard full on Motor racing fan would even THINK of heading to Aucklands Gridlocked Motorway system in a futile attempt to watch something that they are not particularly interested in. In fact, it would put them off for life after sitting in trafic for an hour or so in their vain attempt to get anywhere NEAR the race site. And PARK.? (cos we dont like leaving our Cars at home) Now, just where were those parking areas for the expected 200,000??? In AUCKLAND.??(Boy there are some dreamers about)
Even those stalwart mad crazy blokes and blokesses that live sleep and dream V8 Supercars will think twice before attempting the job, It will be far better to watch it all on the telly than watch the cars whip by in 2.236 secs, only to disappear for a few minutes each lap. Sod that. As always,it will be those that can afford the very best seats (and pozzie) with the superscreens and SOUND that will say "bring it on next year too" but for Mr, Miss, Mzzzzz, and Mrs average V8 Nut, twill be a waste of time if you want to see the RACING. Move it to another 'Street' or put it where it should be........ (on RACE track.) Well thats what I think.!! |

Kiwis have a good chance if the street race goes ahead to shun the event. That is if they don't believe street circuits are good for motorsport over there. If they lean that way they should also be telling their pollies what they think.

And as a result of this action, you expect the event to transfer to a track when? ANSWER: NOT. It is all very easy for you purests to sit over there and tell us to let this event to fail so as to put pressure on them to change their mind and take it back to a circuit for the betterment of all motor sport. The reality of any such action will only result in them removing us from the calendar altogether. We will not have any other rounds to go to. If we want to improve the lot of motor sport in general, then it's up to us to get off our butts and support them at every event they race, join the clubs and have our say. This street race will do much for NZ motor sport. Sure it will not improve any curcuit, but it will raise the profile of NZ's best and that cannot be turned down. Lets enjoy this race for what it is, enjoyment. And support NZ motor sport at every event on their calendar to ensure their continued success. |

NZ is a key market on the calendar and proof of such is the support that Kiwi fans give the event - be that as Joe/Josephine Public or at a corporate level.
Sponsorship for the event is strong and it receives no government funding, unlike many events in Australia. Furthermore, despite denials from Motorsport NZ, the NZ V8 Supercar round has grown the NZ V8 Touring Car class exponentially as it has bolstered not only interest from an entrant's perspective, but also following from a spectator's view too. If anyone is prepared to push their own self-interest in lieu of NZ hosting a Supercar round, then they obviously have some serious issues. Perhaps the biggest handicap for NZ is not a street race at all, but rather Motorsport NZ who seem steadfast in ruining future growth plans of the Supercar category here by not allowing two V8 Supercar rounds to occur in NZ in one calendar year. With confirmation today from someone who will be directly affected by the Auckland street race that the event is almost certain to happen now, we need to support the event, rather than "Tall Poppy" the cause. Let's be thankful for what we have rather than disappointed for what we don't! |
