looks like i was wrong.
This new grading system must be more complicated than the basics i have been reading. 3 requests for an assesment upgrade and no one knows what to do. Well thats what i`m being told anyway ? Any suggestions ? I was told to write to the MSA for futher clarification on the requirements of this upgrade stuff. |

My understanding is that, having got the required number of attendence sigs plus any training sigs (e.g. fire) for your new grade, you then approach the chief marshal at your next race with the request that they place you with an Examining Observer. The XO will monitor you throughout the day in the same way as the olden days, i.e. if nothing happens, or if you do not perform sufficiently well, you DO get the usual attendence sig (clearly, because you attended) but in the comments section of your attendence record book the XO will specifically state that his sig is not valid for an assessment. If you do perform to the XO's satisfaction, they WILL state so in the comments section and you can then use this record to request an upgrade in the usual way by sending a request and the record card (make sure you keep a photocopy) to the grading section of your principal club. They should then action it in exactly the same way as they did with the old card.
I think that's the theory but screw ups will occur as per usual mainly in the form of an XO not knowing what he/she is signing. As for getting sigs from 'Trainer Buddies' and so forth, I have no idea. Phil |

'Trainer Buddies' There are 53 of them according to the MSA Aint seen any yet as For Observers sorry Post Chiefs its a mixed feeling as to sigs, Have only seen the comments section used once But it is for us to use according to MSA.
Grading is as confusing to me as it is to everyone else. |

I was observer on the Saturday even though this is not my normal role. I signed two cards as it was my understanding that I could. I was then told by someone in the know that this was correct thing to do.
I felt that both of the sigs I did deserved comments as they did an outstanding job but I didn't know about the comment box. |

I always make a point of looking at the comments section before i sign.
As i said only ever seen 1 comment, But comments can make a differance in how you percieve a person within there role on the day. |

Numbersix,
thats exactly how i see things, but 2 chief marshals don`t know what to do for some strange reason. i currently have 5 flag & 18 incident. as far as comments go,i only have one comment for cars, due to the nature of the crash. the other incidents i have attended are the usual to which i personally dont really deserve a comment. Plus i have also put down the days in the comments that i have done incident/Post Chief at bike meetings and what the number of accidents/reports done. I know the record book is MSA and bikes ain`t,but if someone reads it,it gives them idea of my time on the bank and other motorsport incidents i have dealt with... Robin, i`m not an observer but like you have signed record cards aswell. As long as you are the I/C on that post, its fine.. and if it aint fine, well oooooopppppssssss lol |

It's is a record of your marshalling, so if you marshal get it signed, then it shows ALL your experience not just the same thing all the time. |

IO's are in charge of the people on the ground and the Observers do their job. Some post's don't have an Observer though.

OBSERVERS are in charge of the people on the ground.......IO's are the one's who know what to do!!
True but all Observers are ex I/Os Silverstone I/Os take no notice of the Observers in most cases. And I am happy to take a back seat...... A law unto themselves, Granted they do have a way of things on this circuit. |

I think that's a very bad attitude to have in my opinion. If you work with the IO's it can be a lot more rewarding. I know of a few observers on here that work with the IO's instead of working on their own or against them.
