Check this out... Joey Hand, #21 BMW M3 in Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series at Ohio on 24th June 2006. You don't see it on the clip but later on he crawls out of the car but the guys on the scene have to pick him up and move him because of leaking fuel, which is quickly dampened down, exactly where he'd crawled out to. I hope I never have to do that! They took him to hospital but I don't know how he is now. He did crawl out so obviously wasn't too bad. Last edited by Craig; 21 Jul 2006 at 14:13. |

Wince. There is the one of the Aston Martin at Mid Ohio. Quite why there is a big drop from track to gravel is beyond me

You can see the rise in the infield...
its to help camber the corner on the infield... maybe so that the water runs off it better when it rains. |

I spoke to one of his friends. Apart from bruises and soreness, he is fine and planning his next race.

Yeah, if i'd have been on that corner i'd have been researching the colour of adrenaline 1st hand. The Ferrari that went off at Oulton last year was quite a big incident from what i hear, similar to the Aston where it's brakes failed and skipped the gravel, ending up on the tyre wall. Michael Andretti's crash at Mid-Ohio was also a pretty spectacular one ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBiXLikp2SM ) but i'd prefer not to see crashes like that, but nose to tail 12 cars battling all race long like the Caterhams do Last edited by Hepatic; 7 Jul 2006 at 13:14. |

Would it not have been more important for the flag marshal to carry on waving the yellow for another ten minutes...or to drop it and go to the drivers aid...had the car caught fire during the rolls would he have just watched or acted before a rescue vehicle arrived???

That is an incredible accident. I'm just amazed and glad that he's OK after that. Surely there shouldn't have been a dip as big as that in the infield?

I'm constantly amazed that the americans consider that a safe approach to marshalling regular circuts. Ovals, great, you can get anywhere within a fairly short time. He sat there upside down for what... 30 seconds, and then the cmeras cut away. How long did he wait there... 1 minute, 2, 3, 5?
How would you like your driver cooked sir, Meduim well? coming right up. |

There are fewer of us these days and tracks have taken to encasing themselves in fencing, making it harder for us to get to the cars from our stations - or back into a safe position before more cars arrive. The mobile crews have proved themselves to be a valuable part of the organization in many cases (sometimes not). Unless we can increase our marshalling numbers sixfold, mobile crews are here to stay. I'm amazed that the driver survived that one, let alone walk away from it. A very lucky man indeed.

What stuns me the most, and I mean no offense to our fellow marshals over-the-water, was the fact that Michael was allowed to walk away from his shunt at all. I know that most Corner Workers in the USA are normally there for Flagging/Communication purposes only but surely Simple Green could have detailed someone to escort Michael to a place of safety and watch over him. This is a fundamental rule here in the UK which is drummed into us time and time again at training days. NEVER leave a driver alone after a big shunt.
Michael may have seen to be ok at the time but I know I'm not alone in experiencing drivers collapsing after the initial shock and adrenaline has worn off. This is in no way a "knock" at my American cousins and please don't take it as such. It is more a general comment aimed at all of us marshals. The driver may well think him/herself to be ok and can be very convincing at the time to those of us with no medical training. The thing to remember is that ANY human-being going through an incident like Michaels is not going to "all-there" for sometime afterwards and needs someone to be near them, and looking-out for them, just in case. but as MikeK1 said, I too am stunned that anyone was able to walk away from any of the 3 incidents. Strongly agree with the last.
There is the "Golden Hour", during which a severely injured person, especially one with a head injury, can walk and talk, . The rotational and shock forces in that incident were highly likely to have caused internal head and brain bleeding, or damage to other organs. Without thorough assessment and if necessary agressive treatment is started in that time, the patient is many times more likely to die. And I know this is a marshal's forum, but what about that driving? Paul Edwards' manoevre to 'tap' Hands' car was planned and deliberate. You can see him position his car and make the move. I know that would be acceptable in BTCC, so is it also in this series? More's the pity - this sort of thing, either side of the Atlantic, brings motorsport into disrepute. JOhn |

Watching Champ Car these days it seems standard practice for the driver to be taken by car straight to the med centre - Michael's shunt was a good few years back now. I'd suspect it's the same for any other series who use the FIV method.
How long will it be before we get the same here? Sure it takes longer to get there sometimes, but the result is a highly trained team arriving with all the right equipment reasonably quickly, and while it's designed for ovals, that's the only way they do Champ Car anywhere in the world. Having said that, how many places in Britain are there where you can have a shunt on an average day and wait 30-40 secs for one out of breath marshal to turn up with a single extinguisher? |

It's been shown quite a few times now, but I'd leave it there anyway and let the mods sort it out.
Besides, that's quite a rallying thing you've got there, a circuit you'll find is much different - I think there are some good videos on the FIA institute site which might help you - www.fiainstitute.com Best of luck! |
