Lee and Alice are very good. I can't stand Jones.

The sky coverage was more enjoyable this weekend without Kravitz.

He really adds nothing to the coverage.

Or rather impress on us how cringeworthy he is with his purile attempts at humour and not very relevant (or interesting) stats.

Yep - although a bit less squeaking and shrieking so far this year.

It was cringeworthy how he'd be talking over Narain in the practice sessions, at times that Narain was giving some insight and all Croft wanted to do was to drop in some irrelevant stat or other.

Given observations on other commentators in this thread, I guess there's only so much talent to go around but way more broadcasters than there is talent.

So I've been thinking (yeah, I know ).

The studio approach that Sky has been taking for the last few races is terrible IMHO. I assume that they've done it for budget reasons but it results in the pundits being too far removed from what is happening at each Grand Prix and as a result, takes a lot away from the quality of the broadcasts - making them too sterile I reckon.

In China this weekend they've REALLY cut back, with Nico Rosberg initially by himself in Shanghai doing the pre-session chats (he claimed that no-one had told him). They quickly moved Ted to be with Nico but I think that the whole studio move hasn't worked at all - just takes far too much away from the experience.

My 2c worth.

totally agree.

its an odd viewing experience having them stand over their table top touch screen while talking to each other...they are kind of staring down at it rather than looking at the 'audience'...it all just feels very disconnected to me.

the actual race broadcasts remains the same for me tho...its really just the pre and post show issue for me. maybe just felt worse because of the number of sessions during a sprint format weekend?

This weekend hasn't been helped by them having their weakest line up from a production point of view.
Whilst Rosberg may be a world champion it wasn't for standing in front of a camera on his own, whilst Ted hastily joined him for the next section it wasn't great.

As for Craig Slater, he's ok at best as a Sky Sports News reporter for F1, but his section with Ted in the pitlane was car crash TV (excuse the terminology). Was he supposed to be leading the piece with Ted or the other way around?
It came across as both having their own plans for the piece which had no commonality.

Generally I've found the studio presentation, to be OK for what it was, sure it's remote and you don't get the ambience of the paddock. But, given it was only for 3 early season weekends and this is the third of those.... Sky can give it more though ahead of any studio based presentation they decide on next season.

Sky use the same studio format for NFL. Someone at Sky must think that an ''one size fits all'' format can be used across the sporting spectrum. It probably saves them money as well.

I thought Nico Rosberg did a good job commentating on the sprint race. It was good to hear not just a former driver but a WDC, who has raced in F1 within the last 10 years.

I would prefer to have craig Slater over Kravitz everyday, one is a good "proper" journalist, the other is a poor parady of "Alan Partridge".

Nico is ggod, knowledgeable and interesting.

The coverage, that I've seen so far this weekend is prettty good, with the exception of Kravitz.

It's Sky Sports Studio 1, it's primarily used for the Monday Night Football (soccer to our US friends) which is Sky's flagship Primetime football game. It's also been used for NFL play-offs US Open Tennis etc.

The digital floor and the large curve Screens are the key factors to it. It's also one of 2 studios they have that has a virtual setup, so they could project and "walk around" items such as a car. They used it a little with the championship leader boards

It sounds like people are liking Rosberg’s commentary, until he starts talking about Hamilton, if comments on Twitter are anything to go by. Basically people saying he sticks the knife in quite a bit. Is this a fair assessment?

Not really.
He will always say how good Lewis is but also how hard he is as a competitor. No one would know this from such close quarters as Nico.
I think there are people who probably view any comment that isn’t idolatry as “sticking the knife in”.

And there you have it with Kravitz it’s all about him and how many people in the paddock he “knows” although most seem to be mechanics…

Nobody has ever taken him seriously, he’s just a running joke with his level of “knowledge” hence the more senior people give him very little attention.

Ahhh - I didn't realise that it was only for the three races - I was thinking this was the new norm & honestly just took so much away from the pre & post race stuff.

If they go back to "being there" from now on, that'll be a good thing.

As for Kravitz, I don't see him magically finding any discernible ability or talent, but he seems to be welded into the role so we have what we have. Don't mind some of the stuff that he does but he just either misses the point or runs the odd vendetta far too much I reckon.

Croft is Croft - I'm not a fan of all the shrieking and shouting and squealing and giggling (plus of course all the mistakes) but I don't know that there's anyone lurking around who is substantially better, so I suspect that he's likely to be welded on also.

Croft is just a commentator. Commentators are paid for commentating, not journalism. Many commentators have a poor understanding of what they are seeing.

Can we leave Mr Rosberg at home next time.? Please!

He is abrasive in his sharing, talks ill of everyone racing, as if he could do better than them inside their circumstances… and when he becomes the post-race interviewer, fakes praise for their effort and performance and improvement

A male version of Danica… perhaps..

Disagree with every aspect of this comment.
I find Nico is willing to express his opinions without being scared of offending someone which is what journalists/commentators are supposed to do.
Plenty of praise from him for drivers when it is justified. It’s not faked.
Faking it is what the TV commentators in your beloved Supercars do.
