ubrben has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
2010 Le Mans Intercontinental Cup

So Silverstone, Petit Le Mans and an AsLMS round will make up the Intercontinental cup. Entry in 5 LMS style races needed to qualify.

A sensible scale to start with, with plans to make it bigger in 2011

Indeed, and we've saved the manufacturers the need to participate in the ALMS and LMS.

This sounds good especially with regard to attracting the big manufacturers like Audi and Peugeot to the non LM24 races, although I do remember reading about something like this predicted or proposed on this board in the last couple of years..

Hmm, Le Mans and 4 other races spread across 3 series, seems some what of a net loss to me!!

Only for ALMS. In the long term, this should help LMS as privateers will have something to race for instead of facing a hopeless battle against the manufacturers.

i'm not too concerned about who wins the series in Europe; that's why it was at its best when it was the classic 1000ks. So whilst I'm not sure if this idea will work, the way they've attempted it is the best possible way they could have done to encourage other entries through the year as it least ties a few manufacturer entries into at least Sebring and Spa/Laguna.

Anyone know if the ACO are going to contribute to any of the teams' travelling costs?

If they don't, how many private teams will be able to afford it? A series sponsor perhaps helping out??

Here is the full press release:

http://www.lemans.org/files/actu/200...__4669_gb.html

Quote:
During its press conference at this year’s Le Mans 24 Hours in June, the Automobile Club de l’Ouest confirmed its intention to link the various Le Mans Series, so in 2010, it will launch a cup reserved for entrants in the top endurance category, LM P1.

This cup will be held on 3 continents in 3 races that are already part of the different series run under the Le Mans label.

This American/European/Asian triple crown will kick off at Silverstone (13th September) in the Le Mans Series. The second round will be the Petit Le Mans (2nd October) in the American Le Mans Series, and the final one will take place on the Asian continent in an Asian Le Mans Series event in November.

A teams’/manufacturers’ classification for the “2010 Le Mans Intercontinental Cup” will be established on the basis of the overall results of these races.

The “2010 Le Mans Intercontinental Cup” prefigures the creation of a world trophy for the 2011 season, which will be run in compliance with the new ACO regulations: it will consist of 6 races minimum. A more detailed presentation of the world trophy will be made before the end of March 2010.

N.B: Each competitor (team or manufacturer) must confirm its entry with the Automobile Club de l’Ouest before the end of February 2010.

Competitors will be obliged to compete in all 3 races to be included in the overall classification.
In addition, they must also take part in 5 races run under the Le Mans label (the 24 Hours excepted) to be eligible for the Intercontinental Cup.

Just dumped the Wikipedia's article and got back to this thread.

They aim to have at least 6 races in 2011! That's a tall number indeed. I really hope that Suzuka gets the third race.

I guess the other 3 races will be: Sebring 12 hours, LM24 itself and maybe Monza or Spa 1000k?

I would expect it to be 2 in america - Sebring / PLM
2 in Europe - Spa & Silverstone
2 in Asia / Middle East

LM24 will remain separate.

I havent quite grasped the 5 races bit this year - is that 5 races inc the cup and LM24 or is is 5 races plus the cup and LM24??

According to DSC they already announced that they will enter the LM 24 race with 3 cars.

But the LM 24 is NOT included in the 5 races Downforce, so they still need to add one more race in either the LMS or the ALMS.

The ACO press release is a little confusing as it states:
Quote:

This seems to suggest they must participate in 3 + 5 = 8 races?!

As I've said before, I would love Monza to get the second European race. Odds are against it, I know. My only complain to Spa is that it already has a 24-hour race. We could almost rule out completely Dubai, so we have Yas Island, Losail and Bahrain. Which of them you think has better chances?
