MERCEDES CLR 98 and 99 back on track

What a good surprise yesterday to see them on track again at the Nurburgring

Ah, I had forgotten just how beautiful those cars were. So nice to see them in fine shape where they belong, on the track. I have a fair amount of nostalgia for those GT1s, being 10 and impressionable when the Mclaren first appeared.

Hi Mike, don't know, both were entered by the same german team, which wasn't looking pro. I would be surprised to learn taht Mercedes sold the 99 one, because of concerns about safety and because of the bad publicity they would get everytime this car is seen. Anyway I could take all the photos needed for the 99 type something you couldn't even dream in 99 at le Mans.

Hi, do you have a high-res copy of the track-action pictures of the '99 car that I could get a copy of? Preferably at least 1280px in width. I love that car and there barely any photos of it online.

Thank you

Both cars including the 911 GT1 in the background belong to a German collector.

I have to look at the videos taken (tomorrow), from memory not good for this one, it only did a couple of laps, it sounds very loud.

More photos on the Modena Days page, the C11 was also there and 2 Mclaren F1 (95 and 97).

I really liked the 98 CLR. The front end of the 99 one always looked weird to me. Very low.

So it was a private track day, not a race meet?

Thanks for the pics Ben!

No, public Track days with spectators which could have all access for 15 euros.

A bunch more photos of the CLR and CLK-LM Here

One photo seems to list the CLR's chassis number as 03/99/007?

The CLK-LM also still features the "Goodbye Klaus" paintscheme on the roof.

I'm very suprised to see a CLR shown in public, nevermind hit the track.

The '98 CLK-LM is still a great looking car, GT1 at it's best (while it lasted!).

The CLR was chassis 003 that raced under #6 at Le Mans and was withdrawn. The cars were certainly not run by anybody closely related to Mercedes-Benz. Perhaps HWA sold the cars quietly after Mercedes withdrew.

More images are here:

A more detailed article will follow.

I am not sure what you mean by the question. The car is famous for not having enough downforce. The car photographed on track still has the diveplanes that were added to it after the first witnessed (second) airborne incident.
