24 Hours of Taking Photos...at Le Mans

Just got back from the greatest sportscar race in the world and let me tell you, it sure lived up to that billing. And let me say, its just as hard photographing the thing I think as actually running it. With only 1 1/2 hours of sleep on a media center floor from 8 am Saturday to 8 pm on Sunday, it was a lot of work. But I would not change that for the world and am already looking forward to next year.

Here are a few shots from the event. Full galleries can be seen at the www.speedarena.com Le Mans section. Enjoy.

Jim, good work as always. i thought of you guys out there schlepping around in the heat....while watching it alas this year on Speed, I was pineing (sp) believe me.
Lets hear it for IS and f2.8, nice low light stuff.

How did you fare with the post race bedlam? Last year I got nearly caught out with a few end of race situations and like the racers, its a place that takes getting to know (having French helped alot though)

Great stuff will start editing the 20 GB of images today! Had the use of a D2X from NPS so will have a chance to compare to D2H and Media format.

Mine are also coming online on my site, all taken from the spectator areas though, so don't expect anything too amazing

Like Mike, all mine were taken in the spectator areas. To be honest I'm not to pleased with my shoot at all. I strggled big time with the low light stuff. So next year (I hope to definitely go again) I'l invest in a decent tripod, since I stuggled with my monopod as well.

We did have rather fun getting drunk though, didn't we Mike?

Nice work all!

kdr, that's the subtlest Vanina shot I've ever seen! (Great to meet you btw)
Some of mine are up on scuderiaecosse.com in the Le Mans section under Gallery.

I had a great time out there and shot pretty well I think. Certainly my hit rate was very high, perhaps due to having good light to work with. My stuff at sunset and sunrise didn't really make the most of the light, so that'll need to improve, but overall I'm happy with my efforts.

It was, as kdr has mentioned before, enormously satisfying to get even the basic stock shots like the Belmondo Courage below. All in all, I enjoyed the shooting but it was strangely underwhelming to be trackside at Le Mans as I was concentrating on getting the job done and surviving the heat.

Other shots below show Aston's suspiciously Stalin-esque approach to flag-waving (note the minder on the left) as well as a motley bunch of snappers grasping at the dawn light.

Thanks to kdr and Happy Snapper for advice, 500mm for abuse in that wonderful Scottish accent and David L for switching to Canon momentarily to clean my sensor.

K-like the EngeBOXBOX shot and the "Abandon" one, nice little details....
oh, and I see you snuck in another off camera flash shot--chance or an accomplice? (and no, you don't need to answer)-thats an image that certainly works bigger, to see the not blurred driver properly. The Audi driving into the smoke is mysterious isn't it, and the last "wall/silohuette" one is nice.
Gav-lovely blur/sharp driver shot there...
HSnapper, oh the joys of 20meg NEFs...

look forward to seeing and hearing more about all your adventures in dehydration etc

purely by chance djb...i didn't notice it first time round either, just thought oh no i've cut the front of the car off and moved on!

nice to meet you Gav as well...thats a nice tatsy rfh you have there, not sure about that truly motley bunch of snappers though, at least one of them needs to get on a diet!

a couple of mine from the race are here

all from ordinary spectators "enclosure" (definitely bad for night shots BTW)

Bernard, des trés beau shots. Le #9, le 63 (Vette) et celle de TVR (bons pour les commanditaires Harmon-machin en "glow" ben fun). Avec les limitations d'environment, tu as faits des belles shots. Félicitations.

Mike Hoyer, I think some of your race photos are some of the best I have seen so far of Le Mans. As good as the single cars/close up shots are, I think your multiple car shots with spectators/trees/sky give me a better feeling of the event. Thanks

Thanks very much! Sometimes it's easier to do that, due to the distance of the cars, and the locations of the fences... but I tried to be as creative as possible.

(bernard, en passant, j'ai trompé du numéro, c'est le 64 Vette avec la belle mouvement que j'ai rémarqué, pas le 63)

Bernard's shot #64 is a really nice 3/4 semi-pan.
