That is going to make fuel strategy interesting.

What it does do is kill off any chance of the lowly qualifiers going for a one stop strategy as they will have to switch to the other compound tyre which may not perform as well over half a race distance.

So they will have to switch from hard to soft tyres (or vice versa) at least once during a race? That is very interesting...

Effectively it's the "red sidewall" rule they have in Champcar.

Yeah but I didn't notice (and I admit I may have missed it) any comment about there being a mark on the tyre large enough for TV or crowd recognition as to which type of tyre was on a car at any given time.

I don't like the new tyre rule. Tactics will become even more important. I want to see drivers passing and re-passing each other, in stead of a governing body dictating the race.

Passing and repassing is dictated by having cars travelling at different speeds during different parts of the race.

A car that is passed because he has the "slower" tyre on,may later,be able to pass because he now has the "faster" tyre and his rivals are on the "slower" one.

What is important is the relative difference between the two tyres.

Also, according to the regs, there is no provision for a car to pit for fuel under a safety car period. They can apparently come in and change from dry to wet or wet to extreme wet,but they can't refuel!

It appears that you will get a ten second penalty for stopping in your pit box (presumably to refuel) if you get the "Pit Lane Closed" message.

Not correct.

You won't be allowed to come in under the safety car, while the pit lane is closed. Once all the cars are lined up behind the SC the pit lane will open.

It works that way in many series with safety cars, and ensures everyone slows down, rather than speeds back to the pits when the yellow flags come out.

I want to see drivers passing each other, but not when it's artificial. The new rules are another step to an open-wheel version of Nascar. But let's not forget, we already have an open-wheel version of Nacar: A1GP.

OK,so you're about to run out of fuel, the pit lane is closed, and you can't risk going past the pit entrance one more time. What do you do?

In any event the rules say you can come in at any time to change to a wet or extreme wet tyre.Which would be for safetys sake I presume.

It's game, albeit a very serious one. The FIA makes the Regulations and the teams try to find a way around them.

I find the whole thing very interesting, so thanks for posting the link, martyn.

But they have no control over when the safety car might appear.

The new SC rule can make interesting results. Imagine following situation:

All drivers are on two-stop strategy and we are getting near of 1/3 distance. Takuma Sato (Super Aguri) is first driver to make a pit stop. Soon after he exits the pit lane, there is big crash which needs SC. Every driver gets behind the queue, then pit lane will be opened. All other drivers make their stops and after that we see Super Aguri leading the race.

You will find some teams go for low fuel and sticky tyres for an opening stint... pass everyone, build up a gap... then fuel up, put on hard tyres... and alas... passing happens again.

I hope they make the soft tyres super sticky so they only last 20 laps or so, and the hard tyres so they last about 50.

Soft tyres to be one second a lap faster.

That means if a driver on hard tyres can push hard enough, and make his car wide enough, he can keep the other driver behind him...
