JPS BMW 325i - photos?
Hi folks,
Hope this is the right forum for this. I remember seeing a photo of two JPS 325s on the dummy grid at a classic meeting at Ruapuna somewhere on this site, but now can't seem to find it. At the time these cars were owned by the Clyde brothers in Christchurch. Sadly Alan passed away at Ruapuna on Saturday having just completed a race in his E36 touring car and the family would like any photos of Alan, especially any of him racing. If anyone has anything it would be very much appreciated if you could post here, or PM me. Thanks |

http://tentenths.com/forum/showthread.php?t=67601 It might take some time to get to them though.... Happy hunting!! |

I too, am very interested in finding some photos of the JPS 325i. It's tough getting anything with detail. A search yields an awful lot of pages briefly mentioning it, a lot about the m3s

BMW 323/325 Grp A Photos
My 1985 BMW 323i GRP A
The only 323/325 in the world in official BMW Motorsport livery. it is original. the car was originally owned by BMW Australia, and run by the JPS BMW Team in Sydney, Frank Gardner. Tony Longhurst was the driver. the car ran in some meetings in the 1985 ATCC and the Amscar Better Brakes Series. The car has Linder brake and suspension parts, and i have one of the original Linder 2.3 litre engines. |

more photos
here are some more.
some are the JPS 323 which ran at the end of 1985, and one is the same car, but in 1986 it was converted into a 325i. both the 325's were in Christchurch NZ until a few years ago. I still have the 323 BMW Motorsport car. |

BMW 323 1986 Bathurst Effort....
the BMW 323 Grp A car was owned privately in 1986. it entered the 1000km Bathurst race, lasted 121 laps i think, and barrel rolled at the end of Conrod straight, thorough the kitty litter on the inside of the corner and came to rest on its side.
the car has been rebuild perfectly. There are some photo's of Tony Longhurst back in 1985. |

it is your lucky day
i am racing this week end i will take some interior shots. all the OZ BMW's were the same, even the M3's, although the electrical circuit breaker boxes were around the other way. i have suspension photos as well all the dash layouts were the same the cages were all based on Matter cages, i think the cars have 110 litre long distance tanks and air jacks my 323 has 4 stud BBS wheels the black 325's had centre locks, BBS wheels all were LHD and ran on slicks had 5 speed Getrag dogleg 1st, gear boxes, 5th direct. LSD, i run 3.90, about 200kph at 7200 max revs i currently have a 2.5 litre engine, approx 240hp. i still have the original 2.3 litre engine |

BMW 323/325 photo's
The M Technic car #45 is a replica of a 1986 325 Grp A Etcc car.
The 323 is an original Grp A car #23, run in 1985 Australian Touring Car Championship. |

Brakes and LInder Engine
Brakes:
the calipers front and rear are "Formula 5000" spec. AP are currently making these and they are period replicas of what was used Size and master cylinders, not sure. but i will find out. Linder Engine: JPS had a guy called "Goofy", who was the Linder engine guru. The engine was built to the Group A spec's of the day. Essentially a standard engine balanced and free cam. the car had a big cam. i can probably get you the cam specs, if you need them. the car has a standard cast iron exhaust manifold. and a standard computer (we think) distributor with electronic control of fuel only. the '86 325's had electronic fuel and spark |

Brake Setup
i think this is correct!
Calipers are the original Girling Magnesium units (used in F5000, we believe) F = 1 3/4 4 pot R = 1 1/2 4 pot discs, F = 330mm, R = 290mm Master cylinders as per Frank Gardner F = 3/4 R = 7/8 NB rears bigger than the fronts, but that was what Frank said! What are you doing with this info? building a replica? restoring a car? |

Thank you for the info!!! I really appreciate it! I am started the build of a full replica jps. I have basically been working off pictures without any specs on anything. I already have a 2.5 motor that is balanced so its a lucky starting point! If you can find out cam specs it would be great. Brakes confused me a little cos they appear to be 4 piston fronts and twin rears so thanks for that info too. It also had me a little confused over the master set up as with most e30 race cars including my own, we all run brake boosters due to rulings in the class so i was unsure what sizes would be required to run front to rear.
Any other tech info would be greatly appreciated!! |

Brakes
Well, that is how Frank set them up, and everyone queries that!!
the rears are 4 piston, i didn't say 2 piston? i will try and get the cam specs for the 2.5 engine i run pulls about 245 hp at 7200 do not go over 7200 as the 6 cylinder engines have an underlying harmonic problem, and are easily destroyed by breaking the cranks the exhaust system is also critical. The original cast iron units are used with a 4 into two into one. you can lose a lot of horsepower by not replicating the set up. i am racing this week end so i will try and post some photos for you wheels are 16", tyres are Pirelli 600 x 225 x 16" 4 bolt the 1986 cars had centre lock 16" tissue paper gap between the wheels and the calipers |

So they never run extractors........I would have thought that the original manifold would have been very restrictive?
Is that 245 hp @ 7200rpm at the wheels?? I am guessing the rev limiter was raised. Does the car run standard rockers as i have had problems with these breaking with only a mild 288 cam. The strut top also do not appear to be adjustible in pictures? Are these something that Gardner had made??? |
