Too many meetings, too many meetings on consecutive weekends at the same circuit.
Some marshals have a life outside of motorsport, or at least try to |

To many clashing dates, a couple of weekends ago, Silverstone, Donington, Mallory & Rockingham all had Car Racing on, there's only a finite amount of marshals to go round.

Ditto all of the foregoing, plus to use an analogy when you get dumped on you tend to move out of the way! Which could explain why some meetings and venues are better supported than others

True, i.e. Donington is only a 30 minute drive away, yet I go there once a year, Brands is 3 hours away and I do about 10 days a year there.

And another thing, if the chief pit marshal was any cop, or fitted the 'Bill', or played 'Simon' says, there might be more volunteers!!!

Steve, that's good to hear (or should that be read?), and despite the comment in my last post, I have heard Simon is OK.
If you're based in Lincolnshire and in the BMMC, then presumably you come under Midlands region, but if you wanted to be with the 'elite', join the South Midlands crew, cos we're much better than those northern jessies , and I have heard theri training officer is pretty cool too! |

No-one's mentioned small grids yet. I would much rather marshal a meeting where capacity grids are the norm, rather than races of 10 or 11 cars ...

small grids dont help, if no cars and long circuits are on no-one wants to be there, i think a few of the marshalls needed threads are up at this time as a lot of us are on holiday or in fact we have just had the nrth west 200 and tt and i know a few of the oulton lads have gone the tt

Seriously though, although I feel sure I know many of the reasons why we are so short of marshals at meetings, I'm still very interested to get as many comments as possible from the 'grass-roots' so to speak. As you may be aware there is a project currently in hand which has been set up to address the whole issue of why there is a lack of marshals, and attempt to improve the situation. |

The problem in my opinion is too many clashing meetings which could be avoided if clubs and circuits communicated more. Also, too many championships for similar cars. If the MSA regulated things properly and merged some championships we would have fewer categories, which would mean fewer meetings, fewer clashes, better racing from bigger grids, and better manning levels. Nobody will do anything until meetings are regularly being cancelled through lack of marshals.

Chicago Region of SCCA created a site that allows cornerworkers (flag marshals, observers, response) to sign up to work events for their region and others in the area. They send e-mails out to all who are on the master worker list with a link embedded in the e-mail. Those who want to attend the event can click on the link or go to the site to sign up.
I realize you have a lot of clubs with different events, but so do we and the Chicago folks have made it easier for everyone in the area. You might want to consider doing something similar to fit your own needs. Take a look at www.cornerworker.net |
