Looks like the Detroit Grand Prix bit the dust.

How can you say that?

Of course when a manufacturer gets in talks with IRL is about ther american market; compensating it with Rally or DTM is a nonsense, cos both are run elsewhere.

DTM is popular only in Germany, Rally have worse problems than IRL, and abot sportscar, we know they're gonna focus on Sebring and Lemans. Therefore, since they quit ALMS, therefore if they don't make it with IRL, they will virtually disappear from the US racing world.

Numbers overall might be a little lower but it is more Audi's demographic. Assuming for a moment that the cost of the irl and the ALMS would be the same, Audi would likely reach more of it's potential customers in the ALMS.
On the contrary!!!

Audi cars belong to a niche market and comparing it with the 16 millions car os the States is completely out of any sense.
As you correctly say, there are currently many more Audi owners in the Alms fan base then the irl's one.
But after some years in the ALMS, there may be reasons to state that the potential of the Alms fan base, in terms of sales, has been filled, and new segments deserve to be explored, in order to develop (or just maintain) sales. The irl fan base could be one of them. In this perspective, Having an Audi engine winning Indy500 would be way more significant than winning in Alms for the empteenth time.

That's your typical wishful thinking attitude If economy recovers it could just help Audi's expectations about IRL.

For one thing touring car racing, sportscar racing, and rally are things that are more applicable to it's road cars and it's technology. Audi is still leeching off it's rally success from the 80's.

By the time Audi develop and get an engine out there in the irl and then promote it like Honda they are going to be in the tens of millions for essentially having their name on the engine cover of a one make car(dallara).

Audi is not going to disappear. The GT3 R8 is coming on line and the R15 will be at Sebring. I think they'll be back completely in 2010 if things calm down in the economy.

In any case, the main point is ALL manufacturers are cutting back so to try to do a deal now is going to be tough.

What is an Indy 500 win worth? Not what it used to be. Tv Ratings are now half of 15 years ago. From the over head shots I saw this year, plenty of empty seats too.

For a company that will sell 100,000 cars or less in 2008 in the USA, that is a hell of a lot of cars to sell just to pay for the program and it's doubtful and Indy win would really bring people to the showroom and buy.

Keep on believin'.

In other news IMS and Vision Racing have let staff go, Anthony Joseph IV will only be run by Vision with a sponsors which by the tone of Millers article suggests there arent any at this current time.
