Well done on braving the icy waters Iain. The local paper this morning is full of pics of New Year's Day swimmers having a good day in Dunkerque yesterday.

Thanks for the wishes everyone, it was a great day with good friends.

The Sunday Times appears to be leading the "it's the beginning of the end" charge ATM and it does feel like they're right. Although I know many more people that are ill this time round, they all seem to be suffering more from the incarceration than the disease and long may that remain.

Having said that, I don't particularly want to catch it and so am pleased the majority of my face to face contact is outdoors. Especially as since yesterday I'm now in an "at risk" category Thankfully it appears the scientists around the world were further advanced in their planning than the politicos, the vaccine roll out must rank as one of the defining moments of our time. If things *are* returning to normality I think we'll have been very lucky to lose 2 or 3 years, I was expecting upwards of five.

Hopefully we can now put "the war" behind us and talk about "the pandemic" as our point of reference. I look forwards to watching "The World at Sickness," "Foyle's Pandemic" and even "Dad's Nurses" in due course.

But "Dad's Nurses" would just be the odd socially-distanced and heavily PPE'd figure, wouldn't it? Not quite the same as "Carry on Matron"

My story board has it set in a volunteer-staffed vaccination centre. The group leader is an ageing ex-army buffoon who means well but couldn't organise a p-up in a brewery. The hero who does all the work is a tall, suave, fifty -something (sorry, 60-something) chap who makes it all happen out of the limelight. There's one excitable bloke who runs around with a needle proclaiming that the viruses are beaten now because "they don't like it up 'em". When we - sorry, they - run out of PPE, vaccine or testing kits the shady one with a 'tache can get hold of whatever's needed for a price.

No, you're right, it'll never catch on. It's stupid, boy.

We've just spent a very productive hour de-Christmas-ing the house, taking the decorations down. For some reason the bit I always enjoy the most is packing all of the old Baubles way in a box and putting them back in the attic until next time.
Happy New Year everyone (yes Bob, that includes you!)

Had my itn C licence renowal this morning, worked a treat (well, almost…), took only two hours to be able to load it from the website, will receive the plastic card by post. Not bad at all. Price 585 € with basic insurance and annual club fee (mandatory but could have chosen a cheaper one). No doubt this service is improved.

Nowt to do with motorsport - but I've just watched the last of the BBC dramatisation of the Stephen Port murder case, and then the factual investigation into just how badly the Barking and Dagenham Police handled the whole investigation.......or lack thereof.....

I don't think I'm closely in touch with my inner gay feelings, but I have to say I feel incredibly annoyed that so far none of the police who quite happily shrugged off a series of almost identical deaths as "not suspicious", and refused to engage with concerned friends and relatives, have been disciplined, although many were found to have had "failings"......

Ah well, no doubt "lessons will be learned"

Lancs, you've hit the nail on the head here. "Quid custodiet custodiens."

No one in a position of responsibility ever accepts responsibility. No disciplinary action, no resignation. It's been endemic through society up to and including governmental level for years.

When I was still serving in PJHQ, the National military HQ, we used to have to do “after action reports” for all incidents, operations and exercise. We purposely changed the section of the report from “Lessons Learnt” to “Lesson Identified” on the basis that we usually identified the lessons needing to be learnt, but very rarely actually learnt them.

Exactly what we're doing here, in fact not doing, with the virus. Two years ago, the prez said "its a war", now we know we are ready to have at least one Waterloo per week if not a day…

So what is it that the world appears to be ruled by pygmies? There's only one strong leader that's uniting his country ATM and that's Putin. Whether you like/dislike Thatcher/Blair/Merkel or whoever, they were world class people who believed in what they were doing.

All the current lot seem to believe in is following the next focus group.

Nail on the head, Max. “What will the Daily Mail/Evening standard say? If it’s good we will do that, if it’s not good we better change our minds”!

Johnson must wear flip flops!

Or in the case of our clown, he's afraid of his own shadow let alone not do what his latest wife tells him to do, plus of course his chums with ready cash and his backbenchers who are almost paralysing him. A bit like Major and the b*st*rds!

Well, I think there is a match here! And guess who pays for the salaries and, more important, for the mistakes? No news so far from our former Ministre de la Santé, she was moking at people wearing a mask saying it was useless and that we had a lot in stock just in case. She should at least apologize and give her money earnings back.

This virus in a worldwide sanitary crisis and the politics know nothing about it but they legistate! Incredible but true. Something is rotten.

Yes, mainly the various country "Leaders" don't have a clue, Putin not included as he is in a class of his own. I thought that if a country causes most of countries a problem, then that country should pay reparation for what they have caused?
