Jim Hall and Chaparrals

My introduction to big time auto racing was when I was a teenager and I saw Jim Hall and his Chaparral win the Nassau Speed Week Race on TV. Later, in the early summer of 1965, I went to the New York City Auto Show at the old Collesium at Columbus Circle. They had a room set up showing racing films and one was of the 1965 Sebring 12 hours. I was able to see the film of Jim Hall and Hap Sharp blow away the Ferraris and Ford GT-40s with their amazing Chaparral Chevy!! Later that year my older brother took me to Bridgehampton where I saw the Chaparral in person and it was beautiful. It won that race too. There is a wonderful tribute to Jim Hall at Ashautomobilia.com at the following link:

http://www.ashcom.homestead.com/ChaparralTribute.html

Some of those pictures look like you could just take that car and put it on a track and it could complete. Wishfull thinking I guess. Anyway, it's a great tribute to a great innovator and racing gentleman. Enjoy.

Sorry, didn't realize there was a separate place for something like this. Just thought some of you young guys might enjoy a forerunner to all of the cars you see today.

Thanks for the link dxk1. I think will do the traditional Sportscar forum thing of leaving the thread here for 24 hours before moving to historic...

It's great that all of these cars are so well looked after, considering that much fewer chassis were made when compared to Lola, McLaren, etc in the era.

Good stuff. To date we have five articles on the cars; http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/search/&brand=Chaparral. There are one or two missing, but those will be added in due course.

They are apparently building Chapparals to the 1960 specs that you can purchase now and they have their own web-site. Here is the link:

http://www.chaparralcars.com/index.php

See the 2E Continuation of Series link on the Home Page! I guess they are intended for historic racing!

...better late than never

by far my fav of all old race cars....love to have one iof those replicas.

the sad thing(s) are that jim hall was really held back by rules and regulations (a true pioneer and a man before his time) and that he used the old "tubs" for the new car...he built one or two and then modified the design from there...making these cars very, very rare. hard to find them at historics events, but none the less, fantastic cars that are timeless classics.

cool links....thanks!!

For those of you who loved the CanAm cars and their drivers, there's a great DVD coming up in the future. Here is a link to a really neat preview:
