Need a new monopod
I've got a Jessops 330 model, and it rubbish to be quite honest. The main problem with it really is that it has a quick release plate, attached to a movable head, which just makes it more wobbly... Add to that it fell off yesterday, luckily I managed to catch the camera before it hit the ground...
Can someone reccomend a more sturdy model, preferably with out breaking the bank? For some reason I begrudge paying a fortune for an extendable pole... ![]() |

I recently picked up a Manfrotto 680B off eBay - new and boxed for about £30. There's no moveable head or quick release plate, although I'm sure you could fit one if required. It's very solid with a recomended max load of 22lbs which is far more than I'm ever likely to need.
Would definately recomend that. |

I use a monfrotto as well and can say I have never had any problems with it, they are light and strong.

Manfrotto 680 is a top piece of kit. No Quick release head etc, has a 60mm circular head which makes a nice firm base when you screw your kit onto it. Have a scout around the web and you should be able to pick one up. Real shop price is about £40.

Most of use have started to use the Velbon Pro-8 as it will take up to a 600mm and suit even a 7ft basketball player.

A Manfrotto something-or-other has done me proud.. It's beat up and battered now so probably due retirement.. But they're sturdy and, most important, you can take them apart and repair them when needed..

second the Manfrotto repair comment. all their products are generally well made and its easy to get replacement parts if the need arises. I have a black manfrotto monopod which is heavier than the earlier model I had (another manfrotto) which I lost unfortunately. Don't know how much carbonfibre ones go for, but I would appreciate the weight savings when it comes to schlepping, I just don't use one enough to need any different from what I have.
I do find quick releases to be an absolute must for monopod use, to be able to get a body on or off quickly depending on the need. |

Just got a Manfrotto 679B off ebay in time for the Nurburgring. Seems superb, super solid etc.
