I just saw an ad by HP which shows the two Williams drivers sitting in the grandstands and driving their cars with...remote controls!!With such advanced drivers' aid,do you think that this day might come?

I think it's entirely plausible to think it could be done now. It'd be expensive though. You seen how many times RC's crash!?

Totally implausible, not at race speeds anyway. They crash as it is! I think you grossly underestimate the difficulty of driving F1. Or is this another April fool?

IF NASA could get a monkey to control a rocket in the late 50's, anything is possible.

It's a good ad, but I see it as a 'see how electronics are ruining F1' sort of ad

Yeah. That's the way I see it too. It's supposed to show how high-tech F1 is but it ends up showing how electronics are ruining F1!

Speaking of commercials, UPS has this ad campaign consisting of a company executive and none other than Jackie Stewart (shaggy hair, tartan hat and all) trying to convince Dale Jarrett (successful NASCAR driver in America) to race the UPS truck. Jackie's performance in the ads is the most unintentionally funny thing I have ever seen. You just have to see it to get it.

I get a kick out of those everytime I see them. The latest one was pretty funny. All Jackie needs is the huge sideburns and thick sunglasses from the early 70's!

It's one of the most brilliant ad campaigns I've seen in a while, and a brilliant example of how a motorsport sponsorship can really be used! High marks to whoever envisioned it!

You're talking about the HP-Williams ad, right?

No, the UPS ad. The HP one is full of sad irony. Though they had one earlier, where a Williams mechanic calls his daughter from the pits during a GP over his cell phone, which I suppose was rather touching, when you consider that the support staff in a race team spend an awful lot of time away from their families for not much recognition.

You think racing RC cars is easy? At a recent touring car meeting in the UK, one 1/10th scale car was measured at 72mph! That's real speed, not scale speed, and powered by batteries!

The technology was there in 93. McLaren made a car with auto gears, auto throttle, active suspension, braking help, and power steering, the driver basically just steered the car like a computer game. Unfortunately for McLaren they developed it for the season when it all got banned.
