Alloy fuel tanks

My track day car is now effectively finished, decals supplied by Mr Weyman sorted the appearance nicely.





As it is so finished I now need to start the endless upgrade cycle.

I want to take out the OEM tanks (fitted with later model EFI fuel pump/sender unit) and replace with a smaller alloy tank in the boot. I know I will need a sealed firewall etc. Will probably run hoses inside conduit welded inside the cabin so it's nice and safe whilst keeping the underside clear.

I have a swirl pot already, and can work out the fuel pump side of things.

What do people do about fuel senders/warning lights? I have seen tanks with sender holes, but they seem to be pricier, plus I want it foam filled. Is there some sort of pressure switch you can put in the feed to the swirl pot that will switch off the feed pump and switch on a warning light when you are running off the contents of the swirl pot?? That'd save much arsing about with gauges.

If you contact a specialist maker of race alloy tanks they will advise.

Words of warning. I went through this exercise, when the tank arrived, I called the suppplier, was told that the red coloured union was the breather. The other two are flow and return, both the same, not important which is connected to flow or return!!

Frustrating weeks later, discovered that one tank union had not got a pipe going down to pick up fuel in the tank, we had connected the flow to this one. Our return pipe was going nicely down the long tube to the bottom of the tank!!!!

This explained why it ran well when bursting full of fuel and got progressively worse.

BE WARNED

Having wasted weeks and money, missed races, changed pipes over and all OK

Safer to weld the conduit under the floor. The conduit will effectively protect the fuel pipe anyway from stones, kerbs, etc.

Don't forget to drill holes along the bottom of the conduit every few inches in case of leakage.

You will need the tank fitted with a sender unit adapter for the VDO or ATL dip pipe sender if having the tank foam filled, otherwise the foam will interfere with the float arm of a conventional type sender.
The VDO dip pipe senders can be bought with a warning light when the fuel gets low.
