I've always thought he has the potential to be another Surtees, and I hope he does have a go at f1 one day. I don't think it'll be any sooner than 2007, now that he's taken on his new Yamaha challenge, but he could add some real character and charisma to F1.

The guy is a God, he is just massivley talented and could probabley do well at what ever he wants.

Having watched him on a bike at the angles they get too an F1 car must be a breeze .

I'd be a bit calmer frankly.
The time he set was undoubtedly good for a newbie, but it still has to be shown that he would be a great racer dhould he come over to F1.
He might be just good and nothing more.
I repeat, its a bit early to judge.

Great stuff. I'm glad he has had a go. More people should try different aspects of motorsport. Better than being a snob or blinkered.

Of course it's too early to judge BUT the man is incredibly gifted. His bike control is breathtaking and the way he makes it look so easy, even with his 'dodgy' starts...! He's an incredible racer, so clinical. He learnt his trade in karts, and was quick in those. He has a passion for 4 wheels, ok he may prefer rallying, but I get the impression that if he did decide that F1 interests him he'd be a front-runner. Sounds silly, but some people are just naturally gifted, and I believe he's one of that breed. Bernie would LOVE to have him in F1 - he'd add so much character too.

Autosport are saying he was faster than Burti on the same day. The BBC say the lap time was 59.9

No matter what, that's impresive...

....But moving to Kawasaki then to Suzuki might be more logical than moving to F1 which is different....IMO...anyway, nobody really knows the level of talent this boy posses...

Very impressive stuff, nice quick laptime indeed

He's without a doubt my favourite MotoGP rider, he's a real character and now a legend of motorcycle history. Would really be fantastic if he did F1!

Being quicker than Burti imo is not the point. The point is, he was only 3 seconds away from Michaels record. When Biaggi tested a Ferrari back in 1998 (??) he was 6 seconds away from the (then) record.

Wasn't that 8 seconds?

I'd say that was pretty impressive.

So begs the next question; is Rossi that good, or are F1 cars of today too easy to drive? While I think Rossi is nothing short of brilliant on a bike, I'd have to lean towards the latter.

Did you see Rossi at the weekend? (He won first time out on the Yamaha beating his last year's WC winning Honda. Yamaha had previously been no where. Like Schumacher switching to Jordan and winning first time out. Yes really.) Touted as being the best of all time on a bike. Next time you see his series on British Eurosport, don't miss it. The best circuit racing you'll witness imho.

for me, its the point of not being in a single seater before, not having the arm and neck muscles developed for car steering, transfering his incredible two wheel control to a completely new beast etc etc--in such a short time, that is what is indicative of a talent that is far and few between. Can you imagine with more experience and concentrating solely on 4 wheels, thats what blows me away.

the guy is just plain intuative about limits isn't he? Would be great to see him more but as has been mentioned, probably won't be for a while. Hope he is safe with himself in the next few years cuz it would be a gas to see him make a real 4 wheeled effort.

I think Raven touched on a very good question. Who else has tested recently? Dixon faired well in the Williams (I know he drove in CART and other lower formula, but he turns left primarily now). Jeff Gordon approached JPM's times at Indy with very little road racing experience and the only single seaters he has driven are sprints/midgets (ovals only).

I think the simplicity of the cars allows less talented drivers to at least fair well in one of these cars. Any number of pay drivers with lower formula experience could step into an F1 car and make a few good laps. Not to take away from Rossi. He obviously did quite well given his two wheel experience.

Now race performance and shaving those next three seconds off are where the men are separated from the boys so to speak.

Absolutely true, but Jeff Gordon's record on NASCAR road courses is quite staggering - he's NASCAR's all-time winner on road courses, and in one stretch won six consecutive road races. He clearly understands how to turn right...
