A touring car that goes 7 seconds a lap slower and costs more?

I'd be interested to see a cost comparison between S2000 and the current v8 set up.

Why does it matter about ultimate lap time? Shouldnt we be more focused on the on the racing?

I seem to recall that one of the reasons that the BTCC is going away from S2000 is that costs have ballooned on building those cars. I may be wrong but that's my recollection.

Even if they were cheaper, they'd be nothing special as they are now - horrible buzzy little engines with half the power of the current cars, FWD etc.

Maybe use the idea as a basis for something more interesting?

The BTCC is bringing in a new format maybe that will be the trick?

- More powerful turbocharged engines.
- Return to the iconic big sedans (Vectra, Accord etc), no more small hatchbacks.
- Spec assemblies for "boring" bits to reduce costs.
- FWD only: no parity politics, no BMWs

Certainly would be worth a try as an 'alternative' series downunder? between the minimalist Fujitsu series and the strictly gentleman racer GT series there are plenty of good drivers and teams without a place to race.

Is Skaifey really tasked with designing the Car of the Future?

Wouldn't it be a good idea to get an independent engineer type (Ceprinich?) to do that and have input from all the teams?

http://www.v8supercars.com.au/conten..._entering_v8s/

Toyota missed the chance to enter with the best team (888) that already had full sponsorship (reducing Toyota's spend considerably!) -> they ain't gonna be in V8s.

Interest comment from Toyota that they would rather enter in a partnership that would promote there current range. So how do they explain those rally cars running in the ARC??

They'll never come into the sport, they sell enough Camry's without any racing pedigree attached. What they've done in NASCAR was to target another demographic, and tying to prize away customers from the gas guzzling GM, Fords and Dodge's. How many Kyle Bush supporters sold there GM pick ups and bought Toyota Tundra's, and how many of those where dead set GM only drives?? That sort of marketing works in the USA, not so much here, given the amount of Holden supports who said they where going to throw out all there Lowndes gear when he jumped ship the first time.

All the manufacture b/s aside, at the end of the day all they're going to do is standardize the current two chassis that are built, which are pretty much the same anyway, and make sure that you can either hang Holden, Ford or Skoda panels off it.

One great big standardization and control component exercise......

This seems tricky in that the (sporty) saloon offerings (at least the cars sold in Australia) of Skoda/Honda/Hyundai etc are significantly smaller than Falcon/Commodore. While the cars that are a bit closer in size (Hyundai Grandeur, Nissan Maxima, Citroen C5 etc) are designed to be parked in retirement village driveways and have no place on the racetrack. How are they going to get around this?

(US cars like the Dodge Charger or a Cadillac would make a mean looking Supercar - never mind!)

No doubt it will be pointed out that the BMW M3 4 door is technically a V8 Supercar. The Mercedes C 63 AMG is another excellent V8 Supercar. Indeed the Lexus IS F is yet another V8 Supercar, not to mention the V8 version of the Audi RS4. Even the Nissan Infiniti M45 is another 4-door V8... It would be interesting to see the rule maker's ideas if Longhurst and Morris had that sort of V8-powered yet nimble BMW ready to homologate in 1993. Perhaps in the regs there would be a second class allowed for smaller bodied foreign-made cars with more sophisticated V8 engines - slowed down by a suitable weight penalty?

They are as "authentic" as any other modern race car apart from the addition of drive to the rear wheels though aren't they? (Short of the touring car version of those regs.) They look a lot like an ordinary Corolla at least, no harm in the punters thinking their family hatchback is capable of such feats.

888 Vectras with flappy paddle gearboxes and the cylinder head put on the opposite way spring to mind as being less than authentic representations of the original rep mobile... Do the punters really expect anything else than prototype race cars that just happen to be circulating in a saloon car body?

(even if the basic engine/drive layout is similar - outside of modern spec controls they wouldn't be expecting the makes who want to go racing and win and those who have the most suitable road cars to coincide?)

Then can (and have) gone to Bathurst and gotten hosed by some Heaphy prepared Lancers with private drivers/backing!

Will McNamara really be so keen on such production racing when Holden are consistently beaten by lighter, more suitable cars?

Explain, the value of spending $1m on the race team and $9m on developing a special lightweight HSV production model able to win the 12-hour, instead of spending $10m on the race team.

It's still $10m either way - and that's the problem with production or production-based racing isn't it!

Although a production hot-hatch only series would be great as a V8Supercar support if it could get the involvement of the likes of Honda, Renault etc who could only afford a couple of hundred thousand dollar maximum racing budget on their importer status...

I'm still 100% against this idea. How can they call it the ATCC with this new standard car?

More like the Australian Sports Sedan Championship.

Will Sports Sedans be eligible? Give them a run for their money. Love to see Wall, Bailey and Mikac out there

Hmm, personally, I'll wait till the spec is announced to decide whether I like it or not rather than making assumptions based on speculation based on rumours.

I like the idea of your second point, if sports sedan rules applied the quality of the V8SC teams, budgets & drivers would see HUGE increases in SS performance over what is seen now - might have to make some big changes to run off areas etc to cope with the added performance.

If they manage to spend $600,000 on a standard spec car, how much would they spend on a car with lots of freedoms?

What's the cause of the 888/Walkinshaw domination?.. not long ago the Ellerys, McLeans and Lansvales could build their own cars and stick it to the big teams.
