Also I wish people would stop talking about "beating" the Lap of the Gods.

It is like any of the classic, memorable Bathurst moments - it was an amazing moment in time. It doesn't matter to me that Lowndes beat the actual time. The actual time itself wasn't that amazing, but the fact that it was nearly 1.1 seconds faster than the next best time, and done in a one-lap shootout was what made it remarkable.

I think it was more possible back in those days for a really talented driver to wring a time out of a car unexpectedly like that.

I think we'd probably cheer a driver who got pole by even one of Murph's splits from the Lap of the Gods... What's more amazing is how much more time there was clearly in it, he mis-shifted, half some slight lockups and was loose more than once!

Anyway bring on the mountain!!!
Agree with you about murphs lap. was a special moment at the time.

Reckon that record will be beaten this year if the weather is good. That will be exciting, but wont lessen the Lap of the Gods

V8 supercars been putting out some really good video stuff in recent days, check their website

mtpanorama should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Just went for a leisurely lap of the track to see what was happening.
Still lots of empty track wall signage space.
New spectator mounds on the exit of the chase opposite the Hotel and also on the outside of the chase, but both all dirt with no grass (should be good if it rains)
Also they were installing a mobile phone tower in the back of the pits, that makes 2 now so hopefully there will be reception.

It was in a different era of the sport, so if the record gets broken, I don't think it will dilute the significance of it at all.

The cars back then, were nowhere near as refined as they are now, so to throw down a lap like that and knowing there was more in it, will always be seen as something special.

George Fury's lap in the Bluebird was nothing to be sneezed at either. It was a shootout lap, in an unfancied car, with what must have been a gazillion atmospheres of boost inside that little engine..

Farmer George owned the big hill that day too!

Certainly did in 2012. But a gentle lowering by chopper is not quite as savage as out the back of a moving Herc

That would've been a sight to behold at the mount. Mind you the headlines are a bit misleading. A Herc isn't a big plane, ever seen a C5 Galaxy at low level? Now that's something you don't forget in a hurry.

Pecky here are the options: part of the kangaroo culling programme to ensure the 1000 & 12 hour is skippy free, practising dropping beer rations to the bogans on race weekend OR it's all part of Red Bull Racing backing a Defence Force Recruitment campaign that will be released just prior to the race - the choice is yours.

PS. I know the answer and it has been common knowledge around town for some time.
