Not the first time Bill has flipped a BMW I guess. Glad he's okay.
Really wanted the #25 to pull it off - would be great for the sport to see all the cars getting a win this soon. |

Well, we started with a crash, and we ended with one... Serendipity, I guess...

I didn't notice at the time, but Aitkin set fastest lap of race just before he got out. I guess he redeems himself a bit from LeMans.

I went to an outdoor music festival and found weather.
Just caught up on finish. Decent race overall . Rough start but decent after up until Bill flipping a perfectly good race car. |

I found the last half an hour plus edge of my seat stuff, from when the 31 pitted onwards. Even by then at past 6 am for me.
Have to say I was wanting a BMW win.... apparently (according to Marshall Pruett) it would have been their first GTP Outright since 1986. A great strategy from them, and but for the GTD Pro lead battle getting in the way, leading to a De Phillippi split second meltdown, and an Auberlen crash maybe it might have worked out differently. But that is class racing. Merde happens.. |

Alsowould've been their first overall IMSA win since the 2000 ALMS race at Silverstone, first one in North America since Charlotte also in 2000.

Well BMW gets the win
6 moved to rear of the field with an over worn skid block so the BMW gets the win after tech inspection https://sportscar365.com/imsa/iwsc/p...ch-infraction/ |

Didn't this happen to Toyota a few years back?

Not sure about Toyota but it certainly happened to Schumacher in F1 when he was DSQ'd from winning at the 1994 Belgian GP at Spa for similar reasons.
"Shortly after the race, excessive wear was found on the wooden skid block on the underside of Schumacher’s car. The skid block was a mandatory requirement on all cars. This was introduced two races before in Germany to increase ride height and reduce ground effect advantages. Wear on the skid block of up to 1mm was permitted. Any greater would make the ride height too low and result in an illegal aerodynamic advantage. The Benetton team claimed that the excessive wear resulted from Schumacher’s spin on lap 19. But the stewards rejected the claim because of the wear pattern. Schumacher was thus disqualified and Hill awarded the victory, with Mika Hakkinen second." |

And as so surprise is the news Penske intend to appeal the decision.....
A statement from Porsche Penske Motorsport read: “Following post-race inspection at Watkins Glen International, IMSA has penalized the #6 entry in the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen citing that the front skid wear of the #6 Porsche 963 was less than one millimeter outside the legal tolerance. The rear skid wear was noted to be well within the legal tolerance. Porsche Penske Motorsport plans to collect all of the data and follow the protest procedures.” |

So screwed up that Meyer Shank got to keep the Daytona 24 hours win despite knowingly cheating the tyre pressures but they strip you of the win for the skid block being worn by less than 1mm outside of tolerance. I know rules are rules but...

I gather it is the rules and you get disqualified for it - just unfair that another team kept the most prestigious win and trophy whilst deliberately cheating |

Sounds like another notation from his book, "The Unfair Advantage", that he and Mark Donahue co-wrote some years back...

Subtle but important difference is that Porsche got caught immediately during post-race tech check, while MSR over a month after the race. Personally I don't approve IMSA's decision to let them keep the victory but I can see why they decided so...

Cheating is cheating and MSR did it deliberately, do not care how long after the fact it was found it needs to be penalised and harshly to deter others from trying it - See in other sports where athletes were found to have been doping years after their success I also see the mitigation - first GTP race after all the fanfare so a late DQ would not be the best outcome and also HPD reported the issue as well which might have mitigated the outcome I also agree with Porsche DQ - rules are rules and it is how it is sometimes |

Yeah, maybe don't bring doping in as EVERYONE EVERYONE EVERYONE knew that was going on and only public pressure did anything to stop it, not even close to the same thing.
And yes, the biggest reason for differing penalties is method of capturing the data and time. IMSA did not catch it and had to have HPD bring the data to them, always going to mitigate it some. And anything outside of the race news cycle gets lost and would not have the same effect so they went with the what they could easily support without too much crying. In Penske's defense it was noted multiple times in the broadcast that Porsche and Acura were both throwing sparks braking for the inner loop. I would not at all be surprised to see him show up with data to support track lifting in the area they used and traces showing Caddy wasn't on the same line. |
