'Operational reasons'? Fine words which say nothing. Even if there were an incident which justified the use of the safety car (and race control's log would show whether such an incident had occurred), should vehicles which were neither competing nor necessary to deal with the incident be allowed on a live track?

It is interesting to note that the same person who made this statement has allegedly apologised to a number of RT drivers for the incident.....

Walt should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
As far as I'm aware, there was no other issue at the time. The COC apologised to the RT drivers for putting the safety car out on the circuit, and siad it was the wrong thing to do. Why did he apologise if it was for operational reasons! I think the full truth is not being told.

If U or I turned up late or wanted to leave early do U think they'd put a SC out for us? Nope, tough luck they should have waited like everyone else - if they can't manage to get across the track when the need to then they need to organise themselves a bit better... <gggrrrrrr!> (rant over - sorry)

Will Autosport or MN be publishing more details on this story - i.e. the full reason?

Well Autosport did mention it in their BTCC write up but I doubt if there will be anything further on it *sigh*

As a driver and a spectator I was absolutely appalled by this ridiculous decision. I was in the grandstand and the gasps of disbeleif were more than evident!
In my opinion there was and is no excuse for it!

Well it looks like that's the most we're going to get from Toca which is a little disappointing since they've obviously not bothered to check into it any further.

Ah well, I guess at least there was a response even if it was unsatisfactory.

As a spectator, I go to see uninterrupted racing where possible. I can understand if there's been an accident but that's just ridiculous. Some people obviously think that they are above the show.

Well we've been told unofficially that we should drop this otherwise it could cause problems for us and for Irish motorsport.....

So I guess that answers THAT question.

Well word is that Richard West has resigned from BMP over 'an incident at Mondello Park' where he was not happy with the actions of some of the people working for/with him. I don't know if the two are connected...?

Ok now I know what BMP is and this is taken from Autosport's newsfeed for today on the website:

British Touring Car Championship boss Richard West has pledged his continuing commitment to the series - despite resigning from his role as a director of the board of British Motorsport Promoters.

It has emerged that West quit the board of BMP, the body that promotes the BTCC, two weeks ago. The move followed an incident at Mondello Park, where he is believed to have been unhappy with the conduct of some people working on BMP's behalf.

The resignation does not impact on his role as series director of the BTCC. Nor was it related to Rob Bain's subsequent decision to resign from his post with Octagon yesterday (Monday).

"I was upset to hear of Rob's departure," commented West. "His drive, enthusiasm and commitment to BMP, and to the BTCC, has been absolute since the very first day we met. Rob was one of the championship's staunchest supporters, but recent developments in no way alter the direction of the series. I am working flat-out to achieve the goals we set ourselves."

If you think that officials crossing the track is a bad reason to use the safety car, last week's NASCAR Busch Series race went under a safety car period when one set of yellow caution lights was accidently activated by a short circuit

hmmm well there's a small level of justification for that in that it is a safety issue. Granted, most circuits would be inclined to run if they lost one flag post but the US is very different in terms of what they are and are not permitted to do by their insurers.

Plus - that was an accident.. Letting officials out of the circuit was on purpose..

oops misread that - I thought it was that a set of their lights had shorted OUT - not that the SC had gone because they came ON!

Well still - it proves they care
