Press Coverage
When discussing the race over the odd glass with friends last night two of the group had been to the race, others watched it on Eurosport with varying degrees of satisfaction but the general question was, why are there no reports in the papers these days?
At one time what we all know and love as the Greatest Race in the World featured strongly in daily papers and on BBC news reports and yet the result was never mentioned I am told on BBC TV news and the only reports in local papers concerned a local driver taking part, nobody had seen a report in a National paper just a Peugeot advert. How did it sink out of sight when 250,000 people are there and around half are British? |

I've noticed the same thing. I've searched for some articles about the race, but couldn't find much apart from the usual press releases from the teams.
Very strange.. |

I picked up the Express i think on the ferry on Monday, was disappointed to find no mention whatsoever of the race, but then came across a full page. I think it sort of depends on what sport has occured at the weekend, whether the media concerned had sent someone down(or been invited down by a team)and of course what nonsense the f1 circus has come up with today.
Or..you know what...unless you've been...people simply don't get it. |

Well, maybe. But I remember it getting a mention on the news in 2002 because of Bentley and MG (I think)'s comebacks even though they didn't win
At least it was actually on ITV4 this time, albeit in amongst the ToCA stuff. I don't think the finish has been on terrestrial since about 2005. Still see Le Mans mentioned in Shell garages, though - maybe Total will start pumping it now as well |

Trouble is the winning car used Shell.
I saw a big article in a weekend paper about Le Mans in the Motoring section. |

Well another Brabham won Le Mans outright for the first time since 1993 and there was nothing in any of the major papers about it here in Australia that I saw. Only a very brief mention in two news programs on Monday (probably about ten seconds between the two). Im talking about the mainstream press, the motoring press both in print and online have been all over it. Netball gets more press in this country.
Quite pathetic actually considering what David Brabham has achieved in his career, he only gets a mention when he comes down to do the V8 Endurance races. |

In my local newspaper "Braunschweiger Zeirung" was a 10 liner in the Sports section on Monday with the headline "Peugeot stops Audis winning streak" . It is possible though that this has been in my newspaper because I live in the region of the VAG homeland.
On Tuesday a Peugeot winner ad appeared in the infamous "Bild"-Zeitung |

There was a paragraph in The Grauniad Sports Section, Monday. Alongside the half page Peugeot ad, extolling the virtues of HDiFAP, and PTT*. Nothing anywhere else except specialist press and websites. Sad situation. Perhaps we DO need a Ferrari LMP effort...
* Peugeot Team Teamwork. Obviously thumbing the nose at Audi! |

Of course, if they want publicity, the ACO could always invite Bernie to take over the race....!
