Favourite scenes of John Frankenheimer's "Grand Prix"?
I particularly enjoyed the last sequence with Garner on Monza's straight and also the driver's meeting before Spa....

At the time they actually released an LP of Grand Prix with all the cars soundtrack - John Surtees, Cooper-Maserati V12 ,Richie Ginther, Honda V12. I actually had that piece of vynil 35 years ago. Wish I knew where it was now.

I love the montage sequence at the begining. Frankenheimer was a poet. Alsdo the Spa footage is pretty amazing. If you have not seen this film, get it, it is the best racing film ever, Period.

Indeed. Seeing the layout of the old Spa-Francorchamps was spectacular indeed.

I particularly like the little details of editing, a closeup of a hand shifting, cut to the view on a rolling car of the litlle shaft moving right next to the gearbox, combined with all the beautiful sounds (and throw in the heel and toe stuff)
the travelling shots (helicopter) of the cars at Spa I meant to mention this a few weeks ago, in Time Magazine, when mentioning Frankenheimers' death, they listed this film and that, but NO Grand Prix! What really surprised in the same issue was an article on the WRC, and how they are bringing in the computer graphic stuff to show the relative speeds of the cars, computer generated to show models of the top guys all running together. We get Time each week, and they never mention motorsport, but here they did, but at the same time , they didn't even mention Grand Prix, its no wonder the american public knows dick all about F1 and what is a **** racing film like Days of T. or Driven. |

The end is the best scene...as james garner walks along the empty pit straight at Monza.....it just captures the magic of a empty GP circuit after the race has finished.

The Spa and Monaco footage takes the cake - looks bloody brilliant. Actually, every second of racing footage in the whole film is fantastic.

It's a pity we'll never see another film like it.

it is a shame , yet i was so looking forward to Slys Driven being made , yet is was the biggest disapointment ever .
I wonder if they realised that the Grand prix film would set such a high standard that would never be beaten in Racing films. |

It's been said before in this thread, but the Spa stuff, especially from the view from the sky, is fantastic, as is the opening sequence in Monaco, you didn't need the pictures for that part, just sound of the engines, the downchanges and so on......

too many great scenes. ducking and diving around zandvoort. slipstreaming on the monza banking. agree with those who say spa footage is best.
especially this one: going down the masta straight full-bore in a ferrari (driver's view), then barely lifting for the incredibly fast masta kink. at some point rain pours down -- and the ferrari doesn't slow down. |
