Best Sounding Le Mans car!

Hey, just watching the 1999 Le Mans video and was listening to the wonderful sound that the BMW V12 LMR made. I would say it was my favorite sounding car with the Judd V10s and the Porsche flat 6s. What was your favorite sound out of a Le Mans racer?

the bmw sounded great, i agree.

and the GV4 sounds awsome going up the front straight through the grandstands.

the CLR sounded pretty good too.

Ewww,I hate the way Judd engines sound........Current F1 engines sound great in a break your eyes kind of way...But Judds(at least in person) to me sound just plain loud and painful.

As much as I hate to say it, I think the Audis have one of the most pleasent sounds.....My favorite place at Sebring is that really slow hairpin(next to Green Park....BARF!) and when the Audis come down from speed there is this almost erie almost silent wistle. It really is almost silent.
Ultimatly, I love the way Turbo engines sound, very clean, somewhat muffled and I love the spooling sound.

I also like the Corvettes for the earth shaking factor.

Currently, the Corvettes and Panoz LMP 01s. And the Porsches. As for all the cars to compete in Le Mans, the Porsche 917s. No question.

Panoz LMP01, Corvette and Saleen! A racing car should make the ground shake when it goes by. Besides, it is pure delight to lie in my tent at Le Mans and know they are still on patrol out there.

I totally agree with Ian, turbo spoolage is awesome. And while there is no car that I don't enjoy hearing, the Judd's sound is absolute magic. I can't wait to hear it scream again at Sebring. Also, I wonder how the Team Nasamax Cosworth turbo V8 (Champ Car) powerplant will sound.

I get tired of those engines though for sure.......they sound SOOO lathargic accelerating. I mean, how high do those rev? Prety high, like 8K RPM right? But for some reason they sound like tractors going up the hill at Petite.
And also, they kinda bring back nighmares of having to go to NASCAR races.

Audi is amazing in that sense, I went to Mosport for ALMS for 2 years and this year oneday I brought my non-car-buff friend to go along. I personally think the Judd and the Ferrari 550s sounds quite awesome, but at the same time coarse and loud, and none of them are particularly fast(Olive Garden 550 and Lola B2K/10...). You can hear them coming to turn 1 all the way from the far side of the track, going relatively sluggish through the corner, then you compare that to the Audi. You only hear them when they are close, almost silent, no drama, and corners on rail with scary speed.....My friend was very impressed with that car and can immidiately see that it is a cut above the rest...

I must say that I really miss the sound of the M3 GTR.

Loved the BMW V-12 LMR. Love the big V-8s in the Vette and Panoz. All time? 917.

Agreed there. I saw that beauty in California not too long ago, and they had it running. Unique..that's all I can say.

Listening very often the ACO CD sounds, I'll say :
- Judd engine (even if painful when you're too close)
- Matra V12
- Panozes, Corvettes...
In fact, I like the contrast of different sounds fighting in the same place (rushing out of the Ford chicane to do the holeshot to Dunlop curve )

Good topic. For me, it was the XJR's and the Mazdas from the mid-80's onwards. As I've probably said here before, I'll never forget my first Le Mans in '86, leaning over the fencing at Hunaudieres waiting for the Jags to come past. Such distinctive sounds when compared with the turbo whoosh of the Porsches. Brings back some great memories

I agree with Fab -- it's the mix of sounds that makes Le Mans what it is. But I have to also say that I like noisy cars best -- those "excuse me please" engines don't do a thing for me. (I do like the Porsches though.)

Back in 86 , the jags were a splendid break through the turboed machines. But The Mazdas !! In 89 there was a potential killing mix between Astons and Mazdas.
All time : the ferrari 512 s that ran the tdf 4 or 5 years ago could have melt your sonotone...

333sp inot so bad though, along with 312 PB

I would say the loudest noise is when a pack of the little Porsche 911 GT3 RSs get together and run around. I remember taking my dad to the 2002 Petit Le Mans and telling him that those are the loudest when they are all together. He kinda blew me off. So, when they came around turn 6 after green flag, he replied that the hair in his ear was tickled from the ear shaddering noise they make. Great to see the replies.
