Champ Car and Grand Am

Whoa! I certainly didn't see this one coming!

The Grand-Am Daytona Prototypes will be running with the ChampCars at next year's LongBeach GP! They'll be doing a 90-minute sprint race on the Saturday.

Story here.

Quote:
David Phillips:

Now, it seems Lola may have regained the inside track on the ’07 Champ Car chassis and, somehow, all those Champ Car/ALMS doubleheaders save for Houston have evaporated.

For the record, TGPLB president and general manager Jim Michaelian and Grand-Am president Roger Edmondson cited the “synergy” between race sponsor Toyota and its luxury brand Lexus’ leading presence in the Grand-Am as a key factor in choosing the Rolex Series over the ALMS.

What to make of it all? Frankly, your guess is a good as mine.
Commentary here.

SPRacer should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Somehow the thought of watching Daytona Prototypes parade around Long Beach doesn't seem all that appealing. Not exactly a DP friendly track...

I think they will put on a great race at LB. Can`t be worse than what Trans Am has done recently.
A sprint race for them though. It will have a driver changes as usual.

Good that ChampCar has a foot in both the GrandAm and ALMS camps

The DP's are pretty small, smaller than the Audi R8 for sure. Should be fine around LB. Probably be more passing than the Champcar race since they can bang around a bit unlike the Champcars.

Well, ok... but when did 2m wide by 4.6m long become "pretty small?"

I didn't realize the cars were 2m wide. That hardly seems condusive to the tight confines of LB.

I guess I should've done some homework first.
I've just checked on the ChampCar specs, and they are also 2m wide.
For some reason, I've always thought them narrower than that.

Maybe 2m is just narrower than you thought...

Try pushing a champ car from the back wing, My arm span is just about 2m, and I'm certainly not stretching.

Something adrift somewere, hang on I'll get the rule book out.

I was looking at the "specs" page of the CC website. Gave the dimension of 78.5", which converts to 1.99m. But that is the dimension from tire-to-tire, not of the rear wing.

Thanks MacD, just realised I have left my rule book in the UK as I was only working as course observer on the Vegas oval this trip.

I should be getting a definative tech crew answer in minutes! Sure it will agree with you, though I didn't realise the tread width was that much more.

Just quickly scaling that car based on the wheelbase I see that the Champcars are likely to be 5.3 metres long! Compare that to the DPs or LMPs...

What we need now is for a clever guy to superimpose the DP drawing, then we will realise how similar they are!
