Where was Tony Sugden?

The grandad in the Skoda was a very popular chap with all the marshals. It seemed very odd seeing a grid without him.

Has Tony really retired? He did tell me at the end of last year that he was going to. Anyone know?

Motorsport News reported a few weeks ago that Tony has sold the car & that the new owner will be competing in the DDMC's Northern Sports & Saloon Championship.

Tony was at Silverstone on Saturday, he came and said hello. His car has gone to the Crawford family who should be racing it soon.

The car should be being run in the Darlington & District MC Northern Sports & Saloon Car Championship, according to the original story in MN.

I hope they treat it with the respect it deserves. I shall miss Tony and Mrs Tony (sorry, but I always forget her name despite the fact she tells me every time she sees me)
Mind you I've referred to her as Mrs Tony for so long that's the way she's going to stay! Lovely people, both of them. I wish them both well for whatever they are doing in the future.

Is Martin Brockhouse now driving it? I saw his name down as a driver of a Skoda Coupe on Sunday's NW sports/saloon race at Mallory. It wasn't very quick in qualifying but got faster during the race, which sounds like someone getting used to a new car? I have a vested interest - he's the only other competitor listed in my class... (Though I refuse to believe that beast has a 1600cc engine!?).

Graeme that's what we wondered, it certainly looked like it, but the car is a different colour and Tony used to race in Class A not your class.

It's the same Skoda Martin has raced for a few years.

Actually, I suppose 51 seconds 'round Mallory isn't that fast - a 1600cc Clubman's car can do it in well under 50 seconds (but my little Seven is well pushed to do 55s). I guess I shall restrict my outings in the series to the twistier circuits - has anyone got NW sports/saloon lap records for Anglesey?

big andy, there was a Skoda 130RS, the woirks ran them in the European Touring Car Championship in the late seventies and they were quick! I think Tonys' bodyshell is based on those 130RS's.

Rod Birley should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Tony's car was built around a sportscar tub, which is why he was invited into the RJB series a couple of years ago. The Crawfords, who now own the car, have three sons (two of which were in the school races at Silverstone on Saturday), they plan to "share" the driving between them. Father Chris did race a big V8 Esprit several years ago. Tony is helping them run the car which will be a different colour when it next appears.
Tony has no plans to race at the moment, but he is always open to offers!!!
