New Comer

Hey,

I have spoke in threads in the past and I did plan and still do to race in the DMN in a 1.3 Ford Ka. I plan to get my license over the winter carry out further testing and then start racing towards the end of the season in preperation for 2010 Is the DMN the right series for a new comer? I am in the South East so it suits me for circuit distances from me and I spoke to a guy at last years motorsport show and he recomended it. I don't want to spend loads to get a competitive car a bit late now after choosing a car that no one manufactures bits for but oh well.

Any help is much appreciated.

As soon as the guys are back from Lydden you will get some replies. It might be best to aim for the (Barc SE) Tin Tops to start with.

DMN would be a bit heady for a newcomer these days. Tintops (either BARC-SE or the CSCC variety) would be a nice introduction.

My advice would be to ditch the Ka, and spend your prep money on buying something ready to race.

We can't ditch the ka as we have built the car already and we don't want the hassle of selling it and then trying to find the money to get a new car then get used to working on it. We would buy something proven if we could afford to but that is not the case at the moment.

Robert Morris has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
Alan hassell use to run a ka for his wife he would be a good person for advice. Kelvin 88 would also be able to help

Get down to Brands on a novice track day,there is one soon,take the KA and practice,practice,practice.DMN is far to hairy for you,go the tin tops way to start and the whole bunch of us will welcome you and give you all the help we can.If you decide to do the track day thing let me know and I'll try and be there.

I have a track day booked at snetterton for Thursday and one booked on a performance ford day on the 13th of November as it is open pit lane. I have been out on track a few times in the car now. You have PM

A good start would be the SEMSEC races at Lydden, they are very friendly and not quite as full on as DMN.
With regards to parts for your car, most of the parts on race cars are not off the shelf but purpose made.
There are some very good engineers in the south east that can make virtually anything and a sensible prices. If you need special part made up I can give you a contact number.

I'm not a racer, but i have watched a few DMN races, why are they 'soo full on' and not suitable for a novice?????

I know at least one driver who started in DMN, and i had vaguely thought about using my endurance rallying spec Rover 1.4 in it. From what i have seen it all all quite clean racing and an easy route in, not like stock hatch which seems to be more like banger racing or BTCC.

BTW sorry for high-jaking the thread, but what would be the best series for a 1400cc Rover 214 16v with little or no mods ???? Apart from stock hatch ?

Really helpful

The CSCC tin-tops, or the Cannons tintops (run by BARC SE).

DMN has gone a bit more big budget than before - the "tail-end" standard is much higher than before, as people have traded up cars, and on a small circuit such as Brands with big grids the speed differential between the front and back is quite marked - and very crowded!

If possible get the 1.3 out and a 1.6 in its place you will run in class D with either! a 1.7 will get you into class C. Tin tops are the way to start but DMN is clean racing but a bit fast, so if you feel ok with that. Stock hatch is quick way to turn your car into scrap. Lots of people make bits for Fords, most of the DMN racers either had a misspent youth racing around the one way systems of Britain or sprinting/hillclimbing.

Cheers guys. Don't worry I know about parts and that most stuff is non-off the shelf and thats what we are doing. Well I think it will more than likely be the tin-tops then but we shall see as I am going to Brands to watch both the DMN on the 2nd and the tin tops on the following weekend.

If I can get my arse into gear, and send off the entry, I'll be doing the Tintops on the 9th Nov at brands - come round for a chat - Car is a (sub)standard rover 220 coupe that was intended for use in the RCN until the engine in my Astra went pop. I now use it for everything - you can still have some fun in the Tintops even in a really low spec car!

Thanks people i will look into BARC SE Tin-tops.

And Big Dave - The Rover is far too good to be used on the Preston and if i wanted to go banger racing i would do stock hatch........
