Ford let Colin McRae go!
looks like McRae is going to Citroen next year after Ford decided he wasnt worth the money he was asking for. Ford are prefering to spend the money on developing the car according to Autosport. I reckon Loeb will give him a run for his money though.

The Xsara WRC should allow McRae to challenge for the title next year, and it will be an opportunity for Martin and Duval to shine at Ford.

Is Nicky going with him?
I think it's a good move but who at Citroen is going to be turfed out to make room for him? Good news for Markko too as he will now move up to be a major contender! |

Be interesting to see how Sainz goes as sole lead driver with two younger drivers 'learning' off him.
It's looking like PSA all the way next year. Gronholm and Burns vs McRae and Loeb, with Panizzi and Bugalski in for the tarmac events. Should be fantastic |

Colin will make a good move with the Citroen Rally Team and give the French team a one-two punch with Loeb. Citroens and Peugeots with Michelins will make a very good fight with their French rivals Peugeots. Who will be Colin's Co-Driver in a Citroen is anyone's guest.

Ford now realise they need a winning car more than Colin McRae. They are developing a tarmac only car like Peugeot and Citroen have.
If Ford close the gap on tarmac they could win the championship. In recent years its tarmac performance that has stop Ford wiining the Championship. |

Colin McRae joins Citroen for 2003.
Citroen Sport has today confirmed that Colin McRae will join the team in 2003. The team released the following brief statement:"Guy Frequelin has asked Colin McRae to join the Citroen team for the 14 rallies of the 2003 World Rally Championship." |

I think he will do well at Citroen. Apart from a fresh start in a competitive car, Colin also has the gallic shrug and glare the French would be proud of!!

Good luck to Colin (& presumably Nicky) with Citroen in 2003.
The Xsara should give him a good chance of the Title. |

I am happy that Colin has chosen Citroen and will help Loeb out tremendously. Now Colin can contend for the WRC car against the Peugeots.

I dont know if it is just me but has anyone noticed that they have said "signed Colin McRae" and not mentioned anything about Grsist?!? I wonder if that is me reading more into it than there is... or maybe not... |

It will be interesting to see how he goes, the car is proven on Tarmac, but we have yet to see it doing anything on Gravel.

Apart from ofcourse this years Safari rally where the Citroen did very well. Plus take a driver brilliant on gravel and put him in a car brilliant on tarmac and you should have a pretty good combo.

Do you think the co-drivers talk it over when the driver gets an offer to move teams? For example, when Tommi moved to Subaru, did Risto get any input? I realise they're not wedded to each other, but they are a team and I wonder if it causes tension in the car when one wants to move and the other doesn't, or if the driver wants to go but he doesn't want to take the co-driver or the new team doesn't want him.

I'd have thought there'd be some discussion, particularly if the driver wants to keep the partnership together, and in the case of McRae & Grist I think Nicky would see the potential benefits of the move to Citroen.
But as you say it's not always straightforward. Giraudet was partnered with Auriol up to the end of last year, but moved to Citroen with Radstrom for '02 whereas Didier was left out in the cold. |

I remember that when Liatti changed to Seat Fabrizia Pons didn't go with him because she thought it was a wrong move.

It's startÃ*ng to look almost certain that there wouldn't be Carlos Sainz either in the Team Ford. Martin Whitaker said they will build for the future with promising young stars...nothing about Sainz. And Huyndai boss David Whitehead have a certain interest of getting Sainz in the team, that possible move meaning certainly Kankkunen retiring for good.

It would be nice to see sainz at hyundai. Lovely car. If only the parent company would put in a decent amount of money now they could do well.

The clearest indciation so far that Nicky Grist will be at Citroen too next year is from wrc.com
In Nicky's New Zealand Analysis he is asked the following Q: So will you enjoy working for a French team next year? NG: "Mais oui, bien sur!" (I know my French is pretty poor but, that is a positive response - isn't it??!!??) |

429CJ: I don't think Hyundai would let Kankkunen go for Saiz. Kankkunen might retire from racing -actually he has done more races this year than planned - but he'll be test driver for some years. He is sport's best in that work and even Sainz wouldn't replace him.
