VW: I wanna have an F1 team
There was an article in The Times yesterday about it on the back page. I can't remember much, it was just them saying their Golf and Polo employees would like to have a go. Sounds unlikely unless they want to buy out Prost...

You can find an article here;
http://www.f1.on.net/view.asp?id=1685 Volkswagen would be the 13th team. Do the rules have to be changed for this? Which brand would they use? |

The Concorde wouyld have to be revised or VW buys a Team. (I bet they could get Prost cheap)
The question is though which of their brands would they promote? VW? not a great Competition history there. Audi? on the heels of the Le Mans effort and with the Glorious efforts of Auto Union in the '30's and as direct competitor to Mercedes and BMW, the most likely choice. However, last year some one ran up the idea of Bugatti, linking to the Alsatian (Franco-German) origins of the historic Marque, its great racing history and the French identitiy of Prost which would make Bugatti the analogue to Fiat's Ferrari. I think we can rule out SEAT and Skoda.. |

Bugatti in F1 would be awesome, like having Bentley back in Sportscars, but i think Audi would be the logical choice though, unless they stick with Sportscars.

In many ways it would make sence to promote the Skoda brand. It would provide extra jobs in East Germany where they are thin on the ground. Failing that, promote Volkswagen themselves. Why go the Audi route when they already have brand awareness through Le Mans etc?

I think Audi is a good choice... and for the team any of those; Prost, Jordan, BAR, Arrows, Sauber and Minardi could do.

If they did it it would be VW or Bugatti, or possibly Lambourgini (sp?).
Skoda and Seat both have rally heritage, and VW is trying to build up Audi in sportscars. |
