Cosworth Engine Reliability
CART put this article up.
http://www.cart.com/News/Article.asp?ID=7354 I thought it made a good point, the cosworths were increadibly reliable this year. However, they seem to have the same problem BAR/Honda's had with their 'hydrolics' in F1 this year. Honda also pulled the same **** when they were in CART. In the article they list Bourdais as the lone engine failure during a race. The thing is I don't get why they are fudging the numbers or not including all engine failures. PT at Brands was a transmission I suppose? I'm pretty sure there were atleast 2 other engines in races. PT also lost his engine early on in the year in a practice or qualifying. Can you guys remember the other ones? |

The Dale Coyne cars didnt blow an engine once... I guess having the same one in all year helped that along

Bourdais' engine was also misfiring at Laguna Seca when he was basically set for 4th.

regardless- the engine were powerhouses, and rare were the failures. only Players and Newman-Haas (probably teams who found one way or another to tinker in the gear box or plugs or ecu or heads) had any failures, sealed as the engines are supposed to be this year, I wouldn't put it past any team to try.
And the Gearbox at Brands- yeah PT sure whatever, a gear box flames up that much? well maybe. I would love to see this engine formula attempted by someone else and achieve half the reliabilty. and really Thumbs up or down on the engines and their 12K rev limiter. I say Up. |

Dunnow, those old Offys, with their barrel crankcases and one-piece cylinder/head assy's, were so damnedly hard to disassemble and assemble, I imagine a lot of them ran an entire season without being torn down.

Sure it's possible that it was a gear box, but it doesn't seem that likely.

Talking to some crew people on the Coast, they have it easy these days with the amount of time between rebuilds, because they tend not to change engines anymore on race weekend...

They just arent noisy enough... wandering around the Gold Coast Indy circuit when the cars were out, the max revs the cars reached didnt even produce a ringing in the ears....
Not like the 19,000rpm Jag Cosworth M.Webber enjoys anyway... |

You've got to try standing next to the wall on the exit of the first and second chicanes... now that hurts the ol earols!

It's not as bad as it used to be though...I remember back in 1998, on the exit of corners the cars would get so loud my ears would be in pain without earplugs... this year, I hardly used earplugs at all during the weekend... In fact, I hardly used any for CART. ALMS and F1 take a ton, but CART is relatively quiet...in some ways it's a bit nice.

and the revving noises they mmake- i really like it, so my ears don't bleed anymore, that's good right? what was that you say? eh? |
