I like it as it is. Some years back, I too thought it would make sense to award points further down the grid, but now, I wouldn't like to see that.

it will never change from the top 6 finishers in the points imo as it will alter the (points scoring) statistics too much!

NO! Don't mess with the points.
The reason for the bump from 9 to 10 for a win was simple - 1 win (10 points) should be worth at least 1 second and 1 third (6 + 4 = 10). With all of these new-fangled points everyone is recommending, someone who finishes 3rd and 4th in two races would get more points than someone who wins and has a DNF. Why reward teams that finish 7th and 8th every race? The rest of the world, including the rest of the motor-racing world, rewards mediocrity like this. There is no reason for F1 to do it. After all, second place is really just the first loser. |

Awarding points below the top 6 is not about rewarding mediocrity, but rather about a scoring system that more accurately discerns between the accomplishments of teams.
A team that finishes 7th & 8th in each race wouldn't end up with more points than TGF so I wouldn't say they are being rewarded in comparison to the top teams, but they would be rewarded in comparison to the teams that are pathetic rather than merely mediocre. The present system allows us to easily see how the top 3 teams are doing relative to each other, but it provides little insight into how the other teams are doing. Currently there are some teams that have scored most or all of their points this season because they qualified so poorly in Australia that they avoided the first turn incident and thus ended up scoring points because so few cars finished. If points were awarded down to 10th place than this type of luck would be less a factor in determining who finishes where in the final season standings. Last edited by Arneal; 9 May 2002 at 17:07. |
