Castle Combe did for my fingers. Rolled an MG Midget onto one hand, dropped a large fire extinguisher onto the other one at a marshal training day.

Happy days.

Considering I've spent most of my life working on cars for a living, I guess my hands aren't too bad. A fair few battle scars, of course, mostly from arguments lost with drills, grinders and suchlike.

But just in the last few days a lump has appeared on the first knuckle of my index finger which is very painful. Now, I've had, on other knuckles, lumps known as ganglians, which are little fluid sacks that can press on a nerve. Usually, if you give these a sharp whack, they burst and dissipate pretty quickly. So, thinking this one could be one of those, I knocked shite out of it - which really hurt! But it doesn't seem to have gone down as a ganglian would, so maybe it's not one?

SWMBO reckons it could be an arthritic growth, but it seemed to appear too quickly for that, so who knows? All I know is it's painful if I bang it against anything, even lightly - so working on cars will be 'interesting' if it doesn't go away.

Iain, it must be a sign of us getting old. I am awaiting cataract surgery as well, although I have not got a date yet. Hope it won't interfere with the upcoming racing season. Hope to see you at Hockenheim for the first Lurani round.

Interestingly the one finger on my right hand that was least affected by ageing joints with stiffness and symptoms that come and go somewhat (Mainly due to excessive laptop use I suspect so lacking the normal range of movement activity one might expect) is the first section of my index finger. Until a few months ago when the knuckle to the first joint suddenly seemed to double in size and become awkward to use.

I recall a few months back accidentally catching a finger on that hand and severely bending it back but I don't think that one was affected. But now it's rather annoying and occasionally catches me out by not wanting to join in even the simplest activities - like using a knife to eat.

The rest of the finger joints have been getting stiffer for years but sometimes improve for a period of time.

In early January I bought a couple exercise devices, one of which I have used before in an earlier version, to try to improve arm and hand utility for movements I would not normally be undertaking. In particular the residual effects of smashing up and dislocating a shoulder about 15 years ago and never quite getting it anywhere near proper fitness since - but that was a long story involving sessions limited physio and, ultimately, a large bag of sugar.

The devices, for a few minutes a day most days, do seem to be having a useful effect without needing any extreme effort or a gym.

Things were slowed a little as a couple of weeks before Xmas I very nearly sliced the end off a little finger and required 5 stitches to hold it back together. That was an excellent NHS experience though all things being considered I was extremely lucky to get fast attention at a walk-in centre and just managed to obtain the services of the last nurse on the shift who was certified for stitching things. His shift finished just as the task was completed.

A pal of mine had a successful cataract operation last autumn. I think the appointment was quite quickly arranged at a specialised clinic but I'm not sure whether he went privately or relied on the NHS.

It does seem like the sort of operation that is now very safe and very quick with a rapid recovery expected.

I'm starting to get the impression that the op is now so commonplace that it will be suggested quite early in the development of cataract problems - a good thing. It used to be very much a last resort.

I remember my Grandmother had the op at some point back in the 60s or 70s when she was probably in her 80s. At that time the whole thing was a really big deal and required an extended recovery time.

Now it seems to be 15 minutes and a return to normal vision within a few days for most people.

My mother has just had the op at 86, now waiting for a date for the second eye. She was quite worried because she couldn't see, but the surgeon explained that was because her glasses compensated for her old eyesight not the new improved version. More new glasses required!

I thought the 'Historic' in 'Historic Racing Today' was referring to a period of motorsport - not the posters?

I've got an 'historic poster' in a frame on the living room wall, just having a look at it now... oh, hang on a minute - sorry, it's actually a mirror!

I did the opposite. The doc meant that my eyesight was not so bad that surgery was needed, but when I told him that I was racing, he put me on the waiting list without any further questions. By the way, the eyesight is still good enough for the license requirements.

I once went in for an eyesight test and I was waiting for the doctor to come into the room. I had a look at the test card on the wall and right at the bottom in very small print was the name of the manufacturer of the card.
Anyway, I read the card from top to bottom and then said "made in the UK by xxx" much to the doctors amazement.
Luckily I have always had (and still have) very good eyesight without any glasses or corrective surgery, my father (who lived to 101) also had very good eyesight and never wore any glasses.

I did something similar, Gordon. My eyesight has always been OK except that as I got into my 60s I needed glasses to read small print, newspapers, etc. I used to buy simple magnifying specs which did the trick and were cheap rather than going to an optician and buying expensive corrective specs. These were good for small print up close but not so good for eyesight test cards from a distance!

The last time I went for a licence medical after listening to my heart etc. the doc did some paperwork and as I was stood fairly close to the eye chart I memorised the 4th and 5th lines down and, hey presto, I passed the test. Perhaps a bit naughty but I could certainly see marshalls' flags on the circuit.

How many of you have a wood burning stove ? We have had one for 35 years that works very well and cheap to run as I can source a lot of wood for nothing.
I have always swept my own chimneys with the conventional brush set but I decided to try one of these type that work on the end of an electric drill.
I live in a 500 year old ex farmworkers beamed cottage that had an inglenook fireplace years ago but was modified in the 30s along with an extension and blanked off. When we bought the house it was very dilapidated and had been empty for about 10 years. I opened up the old inglenook that was bricked up with a small coal fire fitted in the wall. Obviously the chimney was still there that had a huge neck and is 40ft high. I fitted a flexible flue liner that keeps it safe and is so easy to clean out with this new kit.
