1978 Le Mans Mercedes
In 1978, Hans Heyer and Clemens Schickentanz unsuccessfully tried to qualify an AMG-built Mercedes 450SLC for Le Mans; it was entered in Gp.5 but based on their European Touringcar Championship car, with what seem to be only small modifications (it was not the later mid-engined 500SL Gp.5 project).
Does anyone have a picture of this car? |

I was pretty sure a model of it was available, but so far all I can find is a model of possibly the same car(?) in DRM trim: (at bottom of page)
http://www.grandprixmodels.co.uk/fsw.../whatsnew6.htm Otherwise I've seen photos of it in ETC form (I'm guessing you've already seen this one, but I'll post the link anyway...) http://homepage.mac.com/frank_de_jon...78%20Cars.html |

There is a picture of the model made by Competition 43 on their website below.
http://www.competition43.de/mercedes.htm There are certainly pictures in the 1978 Le Mans Annual, but I can't find any on the web either. It was co-driven by Hans Heyer and failed to qualify. |

I can do you a rear 3/4 b/w view from the 78 annual if you want but apart from being No40 it is very similar to the above photo. Did you know they also had an entry in 72 as well ?
As it was 300kg heavier than all the 935's and with an auto box I'm not surprised it DNQ. It broke an oil line and they gave up being almost 22s slower than the slowest 935. Fastest time 4.29.0, best GpV was 935/78 of Schurti/Stommelen 3.30.9 (Pole Ickx 936/78 was 3.27.6). Even the IMSA BMW 35CSL done 4.26.1 Simon |

You bet - it was heavier than a Winston Cup car. On the other hand, it also had power steering and power brakes.
They only ever raced it 3 or 4 times before the TC regs were changed, and engines reduced in size to 5l. (Touring cars had their own category at Le Mans, btw, so this belongs here ) Then AMG tried to put the engine to use in the Interseries - in the back of a McLaren, with a turbocharger - but that led to nothing. Thank you for the images, SL. (appropriate nickname in this instance, too )
One of the reasons the car didn't qualify (apart from being a touring car rather than a full-blown Gp.5 silhouette racer) is that in 1978, their 5l engine and racing gearbox hadn't been homologated yet; they had to settle for an almost-standard 4.5l unit, and the 3(?) speed automatic...
