Nick M should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Well I can only go from what I've found with my DVDs / player but my understanding (and it's by no means infallible !!) was that the output from the DVD player needed to match the TV.

Now Video CDs might be different - the info might be coded on there differently to DVDs, but I couldn't tell you coz I've not played with them I'm afraid.

I think my TV is NTSC only but I'll go and have a look and see what the settings on the DVD player and TV are, to see if that's the answer.

You used to have issues with NTSC and PAL videos but I've not had an issue with DVDs, or maybe I've just been lucky ??

Well, for what it's worth, I just checked the TV and it's NTSC only. The DVD player (Philips, hacked to be multi-region) has the option to output to a NTSC or PAL TV (obviously set for NTSC).

I've also been looking at the discs and they're not conclusive either. Some clearly show Region 1 - NTSC whereas others just show Region 1. I've also got a Region 0 disc (NTSC) and some (but not all) of the UK region 2 discs show a PAL logo on them. But all the discs, regardless of region or format, play fine on the DVD player / TV. If I was being critical I'd say the some of the ones specified as PAL maybe aren't *quite* as crisp as the NTSC ones. But that might just be the discs...

I know plenty of people in the UK who buy region 1 discs and have no problem playing them on multi-region players with PAL TVs. I'm hoping that's always the case, otherwise there are going to be an awful lot of useless DVDs in my collection !!

My confusion stems from the fact that VideoCDs are basically just a way to get mpeg-1 standard videos to play on your TV. If I understand it, DVD is essentially mpeg-2.

SuperVCD is supposed to be similar, in that the content is the same (ie mpeg-2), but the organization of the disk is different from DVDs (primarily because of the difference in capacity of the disks). I haven't successfully created an SVCD yet, but it's a goal of mine.

Since neither of these formats care AFAICT whether they're NTSC or PAL, it would follow that NTSC or PAL on the DVD player refers to output, not source. It would be interesting to see if your PAL DVDs were clearer if the player and box were set to PAL. Maybe you should take a trip down to Future Shop and report back!

The North American version had NO extras. No extra footage, no trailers, no "The making of..."

It had proper sound and good screen resolution, and that's it. And that's plenty.

I'm sure that in 2-5 years they'll start putting together "Collectors' editions" with the extras, and then I'll have to buy them...

One of the best "extras" to go with the DVD is the book "A French Kiss With Death" - details a lot of Steve McQueen's life but also has loads of info in there about the making of the film and all the background work required to get it off the ground. Lots of old documents like letters setting out terms with the drivers for the filming of the race, that sort of thing.

It's not cheap, but it's a cracking book !!

Well I'm going back to the UK in September for a visit so I might take a disc back and see, if only out of idle curiousity.

Michael Keyser did the movie and wrote the book for Speed Merchants and was a/the writer for A French Kiss with Death, so he'd be a natural choice.

My Speed Merchants DVD arrived yesterday coincidentally. Top, top film - sobering in parts when you realise how many drivers didn't make it from one season to the next... - with some truly excellent footage.

The Targa Florio must have been absolutely amazing to watch when it was being run !!

Where did you get it from. Is it available in the UK yet?

BTW are there any other DVDs covering sportscars available in the US that you cannot get in the UK.

Got it from these people :

http://autosportsltd.com/start.html

It's available in the UK in as much as you can pay for it to be posted from the US !!

It's a fairly basic DVD with no extras or enhancement of the original film footage (still get spots and flickers from the film print !) but it's a great documentary of how racing used to be. Even back in 1972 they were talking about how expensive racing was and how much more professional it was getting !!

Don't know if there are many other DVDs covering sportscars to be honest, but these chaps would probably be able to tell you if there were. There's loads (far too many in fact !!) of tempting goodies on their web-site.
