Battery Advice

Hey Folks,

I'm in the process of replacing the battery in my RF89 and was the wondering about the correct 'Amp-hour (Ah) rating. I'm going to start off sprinting, but i'd like to move on to circuit races as well so it needs to have capacity to deal with both.

I was looking along the lines of a red top 15... is this what most people use?

Any advise from those in the know would much appreciated

Thanks for your help,

Tony.

A red top 15 is fine for that car, however i would suggest fitting a jack plug for an auxilary battery to be pluged in on initial start up.

You forgot to mention you know a man that can get them.......

And the Jack plugs too.

I use a Red Top 25. While you've answered this Jay, What is the best way to store these over the Winter. I beleive you shouldn't allow them to discharge fully as this will damage them. So is it best just to top them up every other week or so?

I used to use one of those Refresher charges, but stopped as it cost me a couple of batteries. They run the battery down and recharge it, so it was hurting the batteries.

Does this sound about right to you Mr Minsh?????

To keep your battery in trim buy a Oxford Optimiser or similar from a motorcycle shop. They are often discounted for around £20/£25. I keep mine connected 24hrs a day 7 days a week which is what it is designed to do. Battery always in tip top condition. I use a Yusa 17ampere hour battery which is fine but a 'slave' battery to start from cold is a good idea.

It must work different to the Optimate that I have. As like I said, it works by discharging the battery and recharging it. The Red Tops don't like that. It's possible the Yuasa is different......

Chris....I wonder about the 'discharge' thing. How does it get rid of the charge without melting something?.....I think you've left something switched on

Try "PowerVamp" - the cheapest supplier of racing spec batteries I know. I use one of theirs in my Vauxhall Junior. the company number is 01934 643000.
