Joest Porsche LMP1
Joest won the 96 and 97 Le Mans with the TWR Porsche and did it without a lot of help or develoment from Porsche. However, for 1998 Porsche redid their GT1 and also redid the TWR with new bodywork and a lot of support from the Porsche factory just in case the Joset team beat them again, it would still be a "works" Porsche winning.
Yet it was the GT198 that won and the Porsche LMP did not fair well at all. Why? Were the regulations against open top cars at that time? Was the new bodywork flawed? |

The game had moved on significantly from 96/97 with the likes of the Toyota GT-ONE, 911 GT1 98 and Mercedes CLK-LM.
I recall one of the major problems with the LMP was either instability and, or high drag from the new bodywork, which slowed the car down. |

Concur with Jag. I recall an aero. issue of some sort with the LMP1 that first surfaced at the test day and was never completely resolved for the race.

I also remember some kind of suspension problems. I believe the entire rear end from the 911 GT1 (engine, rear suspension, gearbox..) was transfered to the LMP-1, so it wasn´t completely synchronised with the old front one.
I guess one of them ran 4th or 5th overall before retiring |

Yeah ..... those two scollops either side of the front wheel arch didnt look very aerodynamic to me . It wouldnt surprise me if that was done to intentionally slow the car down .

Yes, I have wondered about that front bodywork as well, as it didn't look very suited to the track. I think that Porsche's point of view was, as it was in 1996 and 1997, "if we can't get the GT1 to win, at least a Porsche of some sort to win" although it was netered as a works effort alongside team Joest.

I have a soft spot for the Joest/TWR car as it was the winner on my first visit to Le Mans ('97). Plus its links to the Jag and Mazda winners add to the mistique.
With hindsight, they should have run the car in '98 in the same guise that it finished '97 with, that was its strong point, nice and simple, the tortoise and the hare all over again. |
