Cage Padding
Can someone explain the rules around padding on the roll cage? I thought there was some specific padding that had to be used, but then I've seen pictures of cars that look like they just use normal plumbers pipe lagging!!

For International events, you must use FIA approved padding, which is quite expensive.
For any events in Australia, less than international status, the book says you can use any "suitable" padding. Most race shops stock it and it's not too dear. |

No, club meetings aren't International. Everyone I know uses pipe lagging.

 I bought mine from Safety Devices. PMolony. Have a look at this link which tries to explain the background to all the safety bits we are required to run. http://www.mallettracing.co.uk/safety.htm Annex J of Appendix 253 tells you all about the cage in FIA speak. It can be found on the FIA website. |

We use fire proof decent spec pipe lagging
However it is not FIA approved. Hmmm. Might get some. Out of curiosity, how do people tell it is approved when it is on the car, does it have a label like race seats. |

Don't use Plumbers Pipe Lagging. Demon Tweeks do
a decent range. I have always been told that if you have a 50p head then use a 50p crash helmet, the same could be said about roll cage padding. |

I would hate to think what sort of toxic rubbish would be emitted from pipe lagging in the event of a fire. Do buy the proper stuff, if only in the area of your head.

If not FIA approved it should be fire proof atleast. I use red colored (to match color of the car) that has asymmetric center hole to make it easier to install aroung tubes that are against roof. Don't know manufacturer but bought it from local racing shop.

Pipe lagging is no good at all it is only really there to stop you chipping the paint on your helmet. If you see the FIA stuff you will see it is very hard and takes a lot to dent.
In an impact the pipe lagging will offer no protection, is it really worth taking the risk??? |
