2012 IndyCar championship fight
It's time to open a thread for the championship fight.
Standings after 9 rounds: 1. Will Power (Penske), 286 2. Ryan Hunter-Reay (Andretti), 283 3. Scott Dixon (Ganassi), 271 4. Hélio Castroneves (Penske), 261 5. James Hinchcliffe (Andretti), 256 6. Simon Pagenaud (Schmidt), 246 7. Tony Kanaan (KV), 235 8. Dario Franchitti (Ganassi), 216 9. Ryan Briscoe (Penske), 205 10. Graham Rahal (Ganassi), 193 There's at least 6 races left: o- Toronto and Edmonton next July. o- Mid-Ohio and Sears Point in August. o- Baltimore and Fontana in September. That's three street races, two road course races, and one superspeedway. It seems to me that the champion will come from one of the top 6 drivers, and most likely one of the top 3. I mean, Power has been dominating in road/street courses, but in 5 races anything can happen: a pitstop mistake, a misplaced yellow flag, a stupped lapped driver, etc. The top 8 drivers are virtually locked. ServiÃ* can pass Wilson, Rahal and perhaps Briscoe now that he's running with a Chevrolet, but not further: it's Kanaan and Franchitti in 7th and 8th. Andretti is 13th and I'm sure we will sink further in the standings (he's 18th in the Maio Andretti Road Trophy standings). I'm pretty confident that Barrichello can climb from 15th. Tagliani should also pass Sato, Viso and Carpenter from current's 20th place. |

Power must be itching to get back on the road/street courses... He should be hard to beat after finishing 2nd the last 2 years!
Be good to see Pagenaud/Schmidt get a race win & would be funny to see Sato take out a championship contender in the last cuppla rounds... |

Power must be a big favourite but Dixon, RHR and Helio are three big spanners that could clog up the works. I'd have no problem if WP won the title, he deserves one.

Good thing Ryan Hunter-Reay is putting up a fight! After all, we haven't see an American winning the championship after Dario Franchitti (plus Scott Dixon) dominating since 2007.

It's much closer on road courses this year, but Power is still the man to beat. If he's not able to clinch the title this year, I don't know if he ever will. Power must stay awake, stay out of trouble and make not unneasiary mistaks, since Hunter-Reay knows his way regular and street ciruits. Pagenaud will be the dark horse for a race win, he has impressed me a lot this year, I hope he can take one.
I'm interested how Franchitti will do, his first non-oval races of this year were not very impressive. Apart from the Indy 500, this seems not his year. |

I think the most important thing for Hunter Reay is to minimize his losses on the road and streets. He might be on a hot streak on the short ovals, but he is a road racer above all.

Until this year, Hunter-Reay was a road/street race specialist...I think he can fight for the championship now that he is became a top driver in the ovals too...

They won't see which way Power went come the next few races. Dixon is the only one who can push him. Frankly, when the road turns both directions, Hunter-Reay, Castroneves, Hinchcliffe just aren't in his league...

Simon Pagenaud (Schmidt), 264 8. Dario Franchitti (Ganassi), 230 With no top 10 finish in the past three races, Power took a huge blow in the championship fight. Castroneves is 3rd but has only two podiums and I don't see him getting many in the next races. Dixon again seems to be fighting for 3rd rather than the championship. Hinchcliffe retired and is out of combat, but that's great for a second-year driver. Kanaan finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the past three races, so he climbed some spots. Briscoe and Franchitti have had very bad results the past month. ServiÃ* seems ready to overtake them, despite having started with Lotus. |

RHR is in par with Power at minumum. Cracking form for RHR on both roadcourses and ovals.

My Money is officially on RHR, Will Power is a great driver, but his racecraft whenever he is in the middle of the pack leaves a lot to be desired.

Simon Pagenaud, 337 (-85) Let's make some scenarios, assuming in most cases that tiebreakers benefit Power rivals: 1. So, the points gap between Power and Hutner-Reay is 17. Let's make some scenarios:
o- RHR wins at Fontana and grabs all extra points. -> Power must finish 3rd. o- RHR wins at Fontana and grabs no extra points. -> Power must finish 4th and get two extra points. o- RHR finishes 2nd at Fontana. -> Power must finish 8th, or 9th and get two extra points. o- RHR finishes 3rd at Fontana. -> Power must finish 11th, or finish 12th and get an extra point. So, Penske must make Briscoe and Castroneves fight for the win, and make sure that Power doesn't get into trouble. |
