Waste of newsprint really....

After all the political carry-on we still say Katherine Gorge, Ayers Rock and The Olgas no matter what the suits say.

Mount Panorama. Is now and ever shall be.

It's not a waste of newsprint if you are a local or somebody who has great love and respect for the place.
The story mentions "co naming" thus it will still be commonly known as Mount Panorama/The Mount/Heaven etc. In fact historically the place was known as Bald Hills and the name changed to Mount Panorama when the public road was built and people were amazed at the fantastic view available from the top.

They didn't change the name of anything - just added a second name. Bathurst is still Bathurst, and Mount Panorama is still Mount Panorama, or you can call it Wahluu if you like.

Over here pretty much everything has an english name and a maori name. Its no big deal, unless you are one of the indigenous peoples who are getting a little bit of their cultural identity back.
Nice to see you guys are (slowly) catching up.

For once I agree with FAS33!
The Bathurst area has a long association with the Indigenous people-it was the first town the early explorers founded west of the Blue Mountains.

No need to attempt to put the boot in with some "over the ditch" rivalry.

SMH 20/7/2014:

Wahluu 1000?

Australia's greatest motor race could be in line for a name change that would see V8 Supercars race for glory at the Wahluu 1000.

The Western Advocate reports that Bathurst Regional Council will officially rename Mount Panorama in line with an indigenous word for mountain.

Bathurst mayor Gary Rush reportedly said the co-naming of Mount Panorama was "a very, very significant thing". The change comes after more than a decade of lobbying by members of the Wiradjuri community in NSW's central-west.

Not really, to ignore Australia's indigenous past is a dumber thing.

Its a co naming - Mount Panorama still remains.

Well yes it is, particularly as most locals and families of locals with a long history in the area, have never heard the name used before.

One can just see the opening scenes on Impaja TV for the Wahluu 1000,
Neil Crompton and Mark Skaife will be wearing the traditional custodians of the mountain clothing. There will be a ten minute session devoted to welcoming you to the Wahluu country( this is not about the Ford 1&2 in 77, or Brocks 79 drive in the A9X). The national anthem will be played by some local traditional elder on the didgeridoo. The ABC will invited to show edited highlights of Bush Mechanics during the telecast. The event will be sponsored by either the mob that make green cans or blue cans, but not the mob from Queensland that make that filthy four X stuff, leave that to them cranky white fellas that live north of the border!
