Legal wranglings threaten Rally Oz

WorldRallyNews.com are reporting that legal / commercial wranglings may threaten the Perth-based Rally Australia event. The circumstances are not easy to summarise but have a look at http://www.worldrallynews.info/cgi-b...9685679,99462, and let us know what you think

Interesting. From what i made of it it sounded like Connelly and his team aren't part of the decision making and Eventscorp are calling the shots, and Connelly, understandedly, finds this unacceptable.

Stupid decision by the WA government, this will now increase the liklihood that the even will move from WA to Melbourne.

It'd be a shame to lose the rally from Perth, as it's quickly become one of the classic modern-day rallies (what with Langley Park, the Bunnings stages etc)

It has been announced that Garry Connelly Associates will not be continuing its consultancy agreement with Rally orgsanisers and that Garry Connelly will not act as Clerk of Course for the 2003 event.

So is that it for Perth

Autosport.com are saying that unless problems with the organisation of the event are solved soon then the FIA Rally Commission is likely to remove Rally Oz from this year's schedule at it's April meeting.

Ouch! So if Australia is remove from this year's calendar, who is going to fill the calendar if being vacant by the FIA?

Not directly linked to Rally Oz, the following was issued last night from Perth:

WACC FOREST RALLY – STATEMENT FROM ESSENTIAL COMMUNICATIONS

Essential Communications Advertising PR Marketing Support Pty Ltd has officially resigned the West Australian Car Club Forest Rally account. Essential Communications is no longer associated with promotion or publicity of the rally or any event associated with it.

My current informaiton is that the whole of rallying in WA is currently in 'turmoil' (not my word) and this may only be the tip of the iceberg there.

I'm afraid there's going to be more and more of this as the next two years go on. Every series has at least one track or race that is in trouble. I'm wondering whether Rally Turkey is going to run if there's a war on right next door.

Rally Oz should be moved to Queensland and be run on the Rally Queensland stages (of which Mr Connelly is very familiar).

They could even run tarmac up the Noosa Hillclimb like the domestic series does (WHOA BABY - a field of WRC cars tearing up the hill, now that would be something.

The wheels seemed to have fallen of Rally Australia when Garry Connelly left. It would be a huge shame if Australia no longer held a round of the WRC. This event in the past had been consistantly voted as the best of the season

This is a nightmare! I live in Perth and couldnt afford to go to the Rally last year and maybe i wont get a chance to go this year... Rally Australia is one of the few big events that Perth can boast of and to lose that would be sad. We will be left with sunbathing and fishing now!
