Do you know, I don't know but the BRDC had plenty of Stewart type guys who no doubt had firm view.
Lee, this circuit is good. Bridge and Becketts are terrifically fast and demanding, Copse, Stowe and Club are technically great and the others link the good bits. It flows; it has rythmn, you can 'attack' and a few changes (not enough) of gradient. It lacks overall character because it's an old wartime airfield, so flat and featureless, but a 10 lapper here and you know you've been in a race. Especially if it's wet. The fiddly bit before Woodcote is new for bikes but you can see where the cars still go at Luffield. Thanks McKay.

gfm-
I was just referring to the new bit! I've got only a few complaints with the rest of Silverstone! I'm not _that_ young that I have no respect for Silverstone!

Bridge and the Maggots-Becketts-Chapel complex are the best changes they've made to the circuit. But they've just made Woodcote worse over the years. It used to be a great, fast corner, with drivers getting all crossed-up coming through there. The run Brooklands and Luffield is about as exciting as dental surgery... Just that frustrating wait until you can finally get on the throttle. Mickey Mouse stadium complexes like those are garbage, IMO.

Poor Woodcote's probably the most abused corner in the world, with respect to criticism and re-profiling by the nannies.

I'm not too fond of what's been done at Stowe and Club either, I can remember when those were just fast, flat 90-degree turns.

The chicane at Abbey, though, I accept, because it adds a good passing spot, and makes Bridge interesting, because it becomes a challenge to keep your foot to the firewall all the way from the exit of the Abbey chicane to the braking zone at Priory.

In a perfect world, I'd tuck Brookland back a little, open it up, and make a combined Woodcote-Luffield, a wide, smooth and open corner, with a gentle bit of positive camber.

These newest changes... Just don't make one bit of sense to me.

Silverstone has always been a great track with a lot of tradition...

Why do people insist on screwing up thhings by changing them??

If it isn't broke, don't try to fix it...

The map at the top has taken the chicane out of Abbey...surely some mistake! You can't have an F1 track without a chicane in this day and age....

Try www.racingcircuits.net

Please people, don't have a cow. The changes shown above are only for the bikes at the moment. As far as I'm aware the car and F1 circuit (if it ever hosts F1 again) are unchanged.

I think Silverstone (at least from my computer games and what others have said) is one of the best circuits F1 has at the moment with a good mix of corners and some passing spots. Why change a thing?

Copse to Stowe is a fantastic stretch of track. Club to Woodcote is pretty poor, espeically the Priory complex

That's what people asked in 1975 when they put in the first chicane at Woodcote, Jay.

Seeing as that poor corner's been butchered beyond recognition already, I'd like to make some changes to try and restore _some_ dignity to it. Brooklands and Priory are horribly out of character with the rest of the circuit, just pathetic 1st gear 180+ degree crawls for the benefit of the advertiser's logos. They've only been that way since '98, so I consider those corners fair game, since they shouldn't even be there.

In fact, before the reprofiling into what they are now, those corners weren't so bad! Compare this 1991 lap with Nige: http://www.f1seasons.idnet.co.uk/silv_mansell.wmv

with this (admittedly lopsided) 2002 onboard with Tomas Enge (The onboard with Jensen in last year's Renault I have isn't online anymore): http://allrace.gpx.it/silverstone.wmv

But pay attention to how damn long Enge has to wait before he can get on the power through Luffield!

Also, looking at that onboard with Nige, I've changed my opinion on the Abbey chicane. Somehow, I'd forgotten just how great that corner used to be, taken flat out in sixth!

Luffield is actually a real challenge because your speed into Copse is so high, a definite passing opportunity bought on more by fear than braking distance. I always split Luffield into two; an entry (first half) involving slowing and turning, then curbs both sides (second half), full throttle from as far back/early as car control and curbs allow.

Talking of the old Abbey - remember the 87 GP when Mansell and Piquet had a fantastic race and Nige sold him a perfect dummy to get by at Stowe? While chasing down Piquet, we all held our breath as Nigel went inside Palmer's Tyrrell at the flat out Abbey to lap him and didn't lift a touch despite being unsure if JP had seen him coming. Breathtaking. I remember watching from Club and everyone applauding that move. Put it back - rid the world of these mickey mouse complexes!

Hmm... They need to go back to design school, it's terrible.

John: I'm suprised, I've never heard a driver describe the current Luffield in positive terms. Never seen a pass their either, but... Hmm...

Stranger: Yeah, thank goodness Octagon didn't go for that Tilke proposal.

Passing would be very difficult at Luffield Lee; it does happen but usually someone will have a problem. The opportunity is on the run down the pit straight and threaten someone up the inside into Copse ... the circuit stands a lot of hustling ...
