Jean-Pierre Jabouille had a contract with Renault for 1981, but he had an argument with the team, so they let him go to Ligier(a team which tried to get him on numerous occasions, but he stayed loyal to Renault all the time) and took Alain Prost, who had a contract with Mclaren until 1982.

They did try to talk Schecketer out of his retirement plans at the end of 80, but it didn’t work

McLaren apparently offered JYS a big money deal for 1981 or '82 but he turned it down.
Think Bernie tried to tempt out of retirement too when Lauda walked late in '79. |

I think it was Brabham that tried to get JYS for 82, they also tried persuading Hunt the Shunt to come out of retirement

Keke Rosberg was close to a deal with ATS for 1979, but Günther Schmid didn't sign him because he asked for too much money-1000$/per race

There were rumours about Panis going to Williams for 1998, after his brilliant performances at Prost. But then his accident happened....

When Fisichella was ruled out of the 2002 French GP after a practice accident, Jordan did try to get Frentzen to replace, as Arrows wouldn’t be racing that weekend, but couldn’t get him out of his contract. Not sure if Frentzen would have fancied going back to Eddie though...

Both Rosberg and Button were rumoured for the second McLaren seat for 2008. Problem is they were both locked in contracts at the time

Leo Kinnunen was close to a deal with Lotus as Jochen Rindt wanted him as a team-mate for 1971.
After Rindt's tragic death however this came to nothing. |
