"ITV F1 presenter Jim Rosenthal reckons that James Allen has what it takes to become the 'new voice of Formula One', despite the legendary status of Murray Walker."

There's not much else to say really. Err....ummm...Louise is wearing a nice dress in that pic....err...umm

Tweed should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Just managed to stop myself posting a thread on this earlier on today, it's quite soul-destroying. I saw a headline on Crash with Allen's name on and for a split-second I thought all our dreams had come true.

Alas, no.

They should sack the J's and concentrate on the M's. Not professional presenters, but IMO far more respected by the fans!

It is an old photo. It is Beverley I don't like F1 Turner and don't call her "chick", otherwise she'll think you work in F1.

What's with the black leather practically everyone's wearing in the pic?

It's not so scary on Suzi Perry though....

I think all we can do about James is carry on complaining in the hope that eventually we won't have to put up with the drivel he spouts repeatedly - drivel such as http://www.dotdotdotcomma.com/motors...phrasebook.php

Amid all the Allenophobia I nearly missed this little gem from JR on the second page of the article. Jim seems to be implying that no-one knew anything about F1 until ITV started broadcasting it. Apparently there were no race fans before 1997, and the ability to switch channels from the BBC to ITV is something that eludedthe general public

Or maybe that's a specific subset of the general public. The 'ITV public' who previously had never heard of motorsport and used to watch the Coronation Street omnibus instead...

"The ITV public" is a strange term.

I recall some years ago hearing of a broadcaster talking to friends about his new programme, to be shown on Channel 4, to which they replied ""Sorry, we won't be watching it, 'we're BBC'"!

It seems some viewers are incapable of changing channels - so maybe there are some people who only watch ITV and were thus exposed to F1 for the first time ever.

I must admit F1 exposes me to ITV! Very rarely do I find anything worse watching there (cue Aysedasi remark ).

It could be worse, whilst James Allen comes in at about 3 out of 10, the guy who does Motors TV's DTM etc commentary possibly fails to score 1.

Bob Jenkins and Benny Parsons (ESPN Nascar) or Ben Edwards and Jeremy Shaw (Itnl CART) are probably the best commentary pairings i've ever heard.

murray and jody schekter (who did a one off commentary in imola the year hakkinen crashed at the final corned) were fairly good.

Sorry to bring this thread back, but 've just ntoiced something mildly amusing - there's a member of the Love@Lycos website calling herself 'BoughtAndPaidFor' which veteren Allenophobes will recognise as one of his 'gems'.

I think Ben Edwards and John Watson (from Eurosport in the 90s) was a great pairing, although Murray and Martin is my favourite ever, Murray and James Hunt had some appeal but I doubt Hunt would last long in this PC era, Jeremy Shaw was always good but F1 coverage would need at least one 'name' who's raced before, and Ben and Martin is probably the best that's realistically possible today.

I wonder what James' contract situation is, whether he has a multi-year deal or if his is just renewed each year...?

James Hunt was brilliant. Once he and Murray had their chemistry going, they were fantastic together.

Reason enough?

The fact he is a Sandgrounder is reason enough in my opinion!
As I am a Lancastrian who just happens to live in Mr Allen's home town doesn't mean I have any misguided loyalty to the bum!
