Its very hard to tell, The photo is B&W but would seem to show the car being silver, therefore it is German? first guess it would be a BMW. The race may be one of the South Americian epic's of the 50's.

Not a BMW, not South America. The time is roughly right.

The German car is kind of right, I guess. |

Cold.
Here's a hint of sorts: at the time the picture was taken, the car was not new anymore; success came late in its life. |

Aha, I don't know if this is cheating - I used the internet. It's Otto Matte giving Porsche their first international win in the 1950 Alpine rally.
There's some info about what happened to this car and it's 2 siblings at... http://www.flat-6.net/view.php?model=64&sel=64&tab=info although you might be disappointed at one of the Americans less heroic wartime exploits. |

Stefan, stand up & take a bow.
It is of course "Herbie sr." , the Berlin-Rome car. It was 10 years old at the time the pictures were taken. And it had survived a war (the only one, of 3 initially built - as you say, one perished in the hands of an overzealous GI). Not bad even for a Beetle... Otto Mathé retired the car from competition in 1952, but hung on to it until he passed away in 1995. He also raced the very first Porsche "Gmünd" coupé. Being friends with the Professor will undoubtedly have helped Otto M. used to win his races singlehandedly, btw; he lost the use of his right arm in a motorcycle racing accident in the early '30s, so he - retired? no way: - took up car racing. He was a true daredevil who raced, and won, till 1959, when he was 52. In his last race, he beat the entire Porsche works team (v. Frankenberg, Hanstein) with a car of his own design, and powered by a - Porsche engine. Doctor - hold the bombardment. This is not a Porsche discussion because the car was designed by Porsche but it is not a Porsche (you might even argue that it isn't a Volkswagen). Think about it. |

Even if it were - at the time the car was built Volkswagen didn't exist yet. The Volkswagen A.G. is a post-war creation. See?
