F1 Privateers

Up until the early 80's there were plenty of Grand Prix privateers. Should second hand or replicar cars be allowed back in. Transit vans and trailers as well.

As a Minardi supporter, iam bound to say yes - gives them another team to race against/beat, just like the old days of Life, Coloni, et al...

No. Either be serious (that is be sure you CAN compete in all races of the season) or leave us.

According to Concorde agreement, the grid is limited to 24 cars (12 teams of 2 cars each) Last time I checked, there were only 10 slots filled, and those were not 100% sure. Anyone can be Bernie's friend, provided that he doesn't just fill up the numbers.

the thing is with Minardi... before they were contributing to the sport by grooming talents like WEBBER and Alonso... Now however with the sport sooo competitive all they do is get pay drivers a get lapped like crazy...

I'd love to see the days of pre qualifying return, there used to be some interesting combinations back then!

Concorde agreement wouldnt let it happen though. Shame because privateers are an integral part of any sort of racing.

These things are cyclical, and there will be a time with less manufacturer support. If Bernie & co. cannot figure out a way to attract privateers in the future, then F1 as we know it will die. Perhaps that means three car factory teams, or more privateer teams, driving last years factory cars, but things will need to change.

The likes of Mercedes, Ford, Toyota and Honda; who are in the mass car market should be made to provide engines to at least 3 privateers.

Why would other teams want to go into F1 any way, look at Arrows and Prost. The privateers will not want to go out of business

How about Minardi being able to run a Ferrari? Williams and MacLaren making chassis for other teams? The return of teams like Hesketh, Ensign and Wolf with just one car? This is what we want; variety! Under the current rules there would be no Williams!

Allowing privateer teams using old chassis will probably be much less costly and produce much more competitive racing.

I would also have thought that it would give more chances to young drivers coming up to Formula One. There just aren't enough seats available for talented drivers these days. We probably stop wasting talented drivers as well.

I wouldn't mind it happening if the guys running these privateer teams are serious & running cars to their full potential & not running the team as some sort of tax dodge & having their cars miles of the pace.

We need teams that are there because they want to compete. Hesketh Racing were superb. Also Colin Crabb's Antique Automobiles were another famous team; they ran Ronnie Peterson for March.

Absolutely yes! Having one or two car private teams would be wonderful for the sport. remember though that it happened at it's best when anyone could buy a DFV and be within a second of pole if the car was set up right and you had a good driver. Personally i think manufacturers should be allowed to sell their cars to other teams. what is wrong with Peter Sauber running last years Ferrari in blue? A privately run M17D or last years Williams with a customer ford (or Honda) engine in the back for some bright newcomer? Nothing. Bernie is wrong on this. His vision is too antiseptic, lacks colour and charisma. 26 teams chasing 24 grid spots. Change the concorde agreement to include payments on the teams results with each car independently, down to 24 th place. It would stop some teams just having one good car/driver combo and a hack. both in two car teams would be of equal importance.

If F1 wasn't so damned expensive, then we would still have the days of the late 80s with 40 cars turning up every weekend. But it's the cycle of things...

Personally, I'd like to see privateer cars turn up and have a go. It would add some interest to an otherwise dull weekend...

This discussion seems to pop up regularly. I really don't see what use Ferrari, Williams and McLaren have for their cars of the previous season other than as museum pieces. Why not let a second string team run them? Whichever way you look at it, last year's McLaren is infinitely better than this year's Minardi.

Tell that to Bernie!! These guys are the ones putting on the act for the F1 fans, and they should be paid a helluva lot more/better.

I would refer you guys once again to the excellent thread by Wrex (can't remember where it is now) - without the privateers to bring up the rear, the factory teams will be folding pretty quick. F1 needs them.
